V-C’s suggestions to academic departments
G. NARASIMHA RAO
Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana held a meeting with the HoDs and Chairmen of Boards of Studies last Saturday and discussed some measures the administration is going to introduce as the new academic year commences soon.
He held the meeting on the day he completed one year as VC. With many of the affiliated colleges to go out of the fold of AU and come under the new universities that have come into existence, the university is going to lose a good chunk of revenue even as it is facing an increase in expenditure. He wanted the departments to find ways to generate revenue and suggested to take more foreign students to bridge the revenue gap to some extent.
The biometric method of marking attendance would be introduced in 10 academic departments as an experimental measure and would be extended to other departments slowly. This method should ensure good attendance of students and teachers as each one has to press his or her finger on the equipment to mark his or her attendance.
New identity cards with a 12-digit electronic ID number would be introduced for all teachers, students and employees.
Prof. Satyanarayana also suggested to the arts and commerce college departments to introduce two papers on subjects like environment, culture, history, English, etc. which could benefit the students as these topics are being hotly debated or necessary in the job market.
Research scholars’ hostels
Sending out the research scholars who have completed their thesis, from the research scholars hostels was the hot topic of last week and the exercise is expected to continue this week also.
Prof. Satyanarayana told the teachers’ meeting that these scholars are being sent out as accommodation has to be provided to those joining in a couple of months when the university takes up research admissions.
AU campus is witnessing this sort of cleansing operation in its hostels every two or three years. This time it is said regarding the scholars’ hostels that some have overstayed and even Teacher Associates are staying in these hostels. The TAs will be provided temporary accommodation for two weeks and later they have to look for accommodation on their own. Registrar P.V.G.D. Prasada Reddy says some scholars have spread rumours that they are being forced to vacate though they could stay for some more time or that a fee of Rs.18,000 has to be paid for readmission.
