Seniors greet first-year students during the Freshers’ Day celebrations at Shrimati Indira Gandhi College in Tiruchi.
Senior students and staff members of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College welcomed 1,460 freshers with sweets, pens and greeting cards last week.
Principal K. Meena distributed free books, notebooks, book bank cards and scholarships to needy students in the presence of college secretary S. Kunjithapatham.
Dr. Meena exhorted students to take part in extra-curricular activities for their betterment.
Three physically-challenged students were given Tamil and English books and library card under the Book Bank Scheme.
Last year, the college had distributed Rs. 2.67,695 to economically poor and needy students.
This year the management and the Ladies Club of Tiruchi have provided Rs. 4,500 and Rs. 1,500 respectively for four students, the principal said.

Release of a magazine marked the second anniversary celebrations of T.E. Thiyagarajapillai Teacher Training Institute recently.
Mayor S. Sujatha released the magazine in the presence of V. Jayapal, president of G.V.N. Trust, and urged teacher trainees to strive hard to impart the best possible education to children.
Teacher trainees staged a cultural programme as part of the celebrations.
Over 50 faculty members from various colleges in the southern States and industry representatives are taking part in the Staff Development Programme on ‘Design, Testing and formal verification techniques for integrated circuits and systems’ organised by the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering, Oxford Engineering College.
The 10-day programme that commenced last week is sponsored by the All India Council for Technical Education. A.R. Ganesan, Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, inaugurated the programme by delivering a lecture on ‘recent trends in optical communication’.
Principal N. Malmurugan and programme coordinator G. Seetharaman also addressed the gathering.
The programme encompassing theory and laboratory sessions in microwave engineering, digital signal processing, VLSI and other trends in electronics discipline has been designed to enrich the knowledge of the teaching community, Dr. Seetharaman said.
