A treasure trove of knowledge
Sri Venkateswara University’s Oriental Research Institute conducted an international conference on ‘Srimad Bhagavatam’ last week, in association with Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams and Hyderabad-based Shanta Biotech.
The objective of the three-day event was to promote ‘Bhagavatham’ as a feast for literary lovers and a treasure trove of knowledge for information seekers and holding the essence of ‘Bhakti’ for the spiritual-minded, irrespective of rich or poor, educated or illiterate.
Visakhapatnam-based spiritualist and orator, Sadguru Kandukuri Sivananda Murty, who took part in the inaugural session, saw ‘Bhagavatham’ not as a mere religious script, but a guide that transcends all barriers to unravel the mysteries behind the concept of creation.Shanta Biotech Managing Director K.I. Varaprasad Reddy and Vice-Chancellors N. Prabhakara Rao (SVU) and Hare Krishna Satapathy (Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha) were among the speakers.
Academicians Dr.Ananta Padmanabha Rao, V.V.Subrahmanya Sarma, Ratnakaram Balaraju, Govindaswamy Naidu, Harihara Sarma, Sampath Kumaracharya and Thummapudi Koteswara Rao presided the various sessions, where the intricacies in both Telugu and Sanskrit versions of ‘Bhagavatham’ were discussed.
Peta Srinivasulu Reddy, Dean (Media) at SVU spoke on ‘Sri Krishna in Indian folklore’ where he spoke on how the verses in ‘Bhagavatham’ gave rise to literary snippets, adages and sayings.
In the valedictory session, SVU Rector K.Ratnaiah explained the glory of ‘Pothana Bhagavatham’, while Professors P.Narasimha Reddy, Rama Suryanarayana (RSVP), Lalitha Kumari, Kasireddy Venkat Reddy and others spoke on how physical, geological, scientific and other modern sciences had a reference in ‘Bhagavatam’.

JNTUH
The UGC expert committee visited Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTUH), Hyderabad in connection with granting of 12 (B) status and 11th plan grants for the new established University.
The seven member committee was headed by Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University Professor R. P. Bajpai.
The committee went through the entire university and visited all the departments and interacted with all the Directors, Principals, teaching and non-teaching staff, students and Principals of affiliated engineering colleges and industry partners.
The committee expressed their happiness with the amenities available and expressed their willingness to recommend for the grant of 12-B status to the University. The Vice-Chancellor, D.N. Reddy gave a detailed presentation about the utilisation of 10th plan grants and also for the proposals of 11th plan grants.
He said that there is a need funds for construction of hostels, lecture hall complex for the proposed five-year integrated dual P.G. programme for this academic year at JNTU campus.
The University has requested the committee for grant of Rs. 21 crore in the 11th plan.
The Committee recommendations will be known by the end of July 2009. After getting the 12-B status, the University will submit proposals to National Assessment and Accreditation Council for grading JNTU.

UoH
The University of Hyderabad (UoH) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Westfaliche Wilhelms-Universitat (WWU) Munster, Germany to collaborate in academic activities and towards internationalisation of higher education.
According to a press note, the collaboration includes exchange of faculty members, students, publications and joint research programmes. In line with this MoU, UoH and WWU will establish the first Indo-German International Research Training Group (Graduate School) in the area of Molecular and Cellular GlycoSciences (MCGS).
