TALENTED LOT: Students taking part in the RoboCamp at the International Institute of Information Technology in Hyderabad.

It was fun, yet competitive. Exhibiting their talent in designing, developing applications and operating robots in a week, students had a good learning experience at the International Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad’s (IIIT-H) RoboCamp 2009.

Conducted by the IIIT-H Robotics Club, the event this year saw participation of over 190 students across the country, indicating Robotics as the new craze among students.

The students camp up with mobile operated robot, flying dragon robot, surveillance robot and many more interesting works using simple robot building techniques. The components used were also sensors, micro-controllers, DC motors etc.

Students of Tirumala Engineering College, Bogaram presented a mobile operated robot. It operates based on the Dual Tone Multi-Frequency signals received on the receiver mobile from the transmitter mobile. The robot’s movement can be controlled on the transmitter mobile. When the user operates 2 digit key on the transmitter mobile, the robot would move upwards, likewise 8 digit key is operated, the robot would move downwards, explains Sainath, student Group head.

Interesting fare

Though there were many interesting robots, Kakinada Institute of Engineering Technology students’ surveillance robot, MGIT, Gandipet students’ flying dragon robot attracted visitors’ attention.

The six-day workshop is conducted every year and students are taught basics in robot building techniques, wireless robot control, navigation using visual experience.

IIIT-H is shortly coming up with Robomag, a guide, which will cover a wide range of robotics topics and help students to make a robot o their own.

It will also come with a compact disc providing software details to programme a robot.
