Careers in clinical research

Please tell me about clinical research and the career prospects it provides. Which institutes offer the course?

Clinical research deals the responses of human subjects to drugs and medical treatments. This area of medical science ensures that a new drug complies with the agreed standards. It evaluates medical treatments and diagnostic tests.

Institute of Clinical Research India is a premier institute offering M.Sc Clinical Research at its Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Bangalore campuses.

The institute has tie-up with Cranfield University, UK and the students can choose to pursue the course in UK. Either way, students receive the degree from the university.

The course is integrated with Postgraduate Diploma in Pharmaceutical Management that aims at imparting knowledge of various functional areas of management and inculcating leadership skills in students.

Eligibility

The eligibility criterion is a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Bioscience/ Life Sciences (with any of Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Biotech as subjects) with at least 50 per cent marks or bachelor’s or master’s degree with Chemistry as a subject with at least 50 per cent marks or bachelor’s or master’s degree in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences or medicine or bachelor’s or equivalent degree/ diploma in Nursing. Manipal Universal Learning, Bangalore offers Diploma in Clinical Research and Regulatory Affairs.

The eligibility criterion is minimum 50 percent marks in graduation in Life Sciences, Home Sciences, Pharmacy, Medicine, Alternate Medicine, Dentistry, Allied Health Sciences and Biotechnology.

Nexus Clinical Research Institute, Delhi offers Advanced Comprehensive Post-Graduate Diploma in Clinical Research in both regular and distance modes. Candidates with degrees like MBBS/ MD/BDS /BAMS/ BHMS/ B.Tech (Biotechnology/ Pharmaceutical Science)/ B. Pharmacy/ BVSC/ B.Sc (Nursing)/ B.Sc/ M.Sc/ M.Pharmacy/ M.Sc/ MA (Statistics) can apply for the course. For details, log on to www.nexus-cri.org

Placement

These institutes also offer placement services to their students. Students can seek employment in pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, government organisations, research organisations and educational institutes. Some roles they can assume are clinical investigator, site coordinator, research associate, medical writer, auditor or manager of a clinical project.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Civil Services Examination for recruitment to the Indian Foreign Service, Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service and other services like Indian Revenue Service, Indian Audit and Accounts Service and Central Secretariat Service. Top performers are chosen for IFS, IAS or IPS.

Candidate appearing for this examination must be between 21-30 years of age. The eligibility criterion is a degree from a recognised university.

Civil Services Examination involves two stages -- Preliminary and Main. The Preliminary examination has two papers of objective type. Paper I is general studies (carries 150 marks) and Paper II is in your optional subject (carries 300 marks). The total number of optional subjects available for preliminary examination is 23.

The Main examination has totally nine papers. Paper I is in one of the Indian Languages to be selected by the candidate from the 18 languages included in the eighth Schedule to the Constitution. Paper II is in English.

Both these papers carry 300 marks each. Paper III is essay writing and carries 200 marks. Paper IV and V are in general studies and carry 300 marks for each paper.

Papers VI, VII, VIII and IX are in any two subjects chosen from the optional subject list. There are two papers for each of the subject and carry 300 marks each. The number of optional subjects given for main examination is 25.

Civil services examination is one of the toughest competitive examinations in India. So choose your optional carefully. You may be comfortable opting for optional subjects that are related to your academic background or you can go for subjects under humanities as students find them easier to deal with.
