Corporate world should focus on macro issues University roundup



Health matters: Doctors from the Institute of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic Diseases and the University Health Centre conducting health check-up of OU students as part of the varsity’s initiative to prepare a database of the health profile of newly admitted PG students.

Accountability and transparency- these were the key words mentioned by speakers at the National Seminar on Corporate Reporting-Ethical Practices conducted by the Department of Commerce, Osmania University.

The day-long seminar was divided into two technical sessions- Corporate Reporting and Ethical Issues followed by a session on Corporate Governance. “With the recent incidents in the corporate world, it is important to focus on macro issues and one such issue is that of corporate reporting. Ethics or moral practices in this sector should lead to unity and oneness and should not lead to division for vested interests,” said M. Shri Nivas, Chairman, Board of Studies, Commerce, O.U.

Speaking on financial reporting in the government sector, G.M. Majib, Director, State Audit, Government of AP pointed out there was a need to revise financial reporting in the sector to decrease inconsistencies and to bring about uniformity.

He said often vital information on investments was withheld and there is a misclassification during disclosure of financial statements.

The Local head of Wipro, B. Krishna Murthy explained the three-tier corporate reporting system in the company and explained the ombudsman process to the audience.

K. Eresi, professor of Commerce, Bangalore University said ethics in any business starts from the day one and also depends on the culture in which one was brought up.

He referred to the difference between European countries and the Asian countries.

Seyed E. Hasnain, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad has been honoured with the prestigious Robert Koch Fellowship. Prof. Hasnain shares this honour for this year together with Harald zur Hausen (Nobel Laureate 2008) and Reinhard Kurth (Former Director, Robert Koch Institute, Berlin).

Prof. Hasnain received this fellowship for his contributions to infectious diseases. The honours were jointly conferred upon them at a formal function organised by the Robert-Koch Institute (RKI) in Berlin, Germany. Prof. Hasnain is the first Indian to get this coveted recognition.

BRAOU

Application forms for admissions into three-year postgraduate degree in Business Administration (MBA) and Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM) offered by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) for 2009-10 are being issued by the university.

The medium of instruction will be English.

The application forms and prospectus will be available at university headquarters at Jubilee Hills and all regional co-ordination centres, a press note from the university said. They will also be available at R.G. Kedia College of Commerce, Chaderghat for the convenience of prospective students from twin cities, the release added.

The last date for issue and submission of filled-in application forms for MBA and BHM courses is July 25 and July 10 respectively.
