VSU offers new courses

NITHM will supply course material and faculty for running Master of Travel and Tourism Management course

The management of Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) will have tie-up with National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management (NITHM), Hyderabad and Narayana Hospitals, Nellore for the new courses being introduced by the university from this academic year.
VSU is already offering six courses including MCA, MBA, MSW, MA (English), M.Sc. (Organic Chemistry) and M.Sc. (Marine Biology). From the second year, the university management is introducing Hospital Management, Master of Travel and Tourism Management and Five-year Integrated Course in Bio-technology.
A three-member team headed by Nithm director general Dr. A.K.V.S.Reddy visited the university recently and enquired about the syllabus, intake capacity of students, faculty and other details being involved in the newly proposed Travel and Tourism Management course.
Tourism industry
Speaking to ‘The Hindu’, Dr. Reddy said Nithm, an autonomous institute jointly established by Government of AP and Government of India, is offering many courses including MBA with (Tourism and Hospitality), BBA (Tourism and Hospitality) and Bachelor of Hotel management and Catering Technology.
Besides, diploma and certificate programmes are being offered in Diploma in Travel Agency and Tour Operators, Diploma in Facilities Management, Event Management, Food Production and Restaurant and Catering Services and Housekeeping and Tour Guiding programmes.
The institute will encourage the colleges, which are offering courses in tourism and related courses and will have an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with VSU. Nithm will provide necessary help in supplying course material and faculty for running the new course in the university, said Dr.Reddy.
VSU Vice-Chancellor C.R. Visweswara Rao said the tourism sector is having good potential to generate employment in the country in future. It is estimated that about 80,000 professionally trained persons are in hospitality industry in the country and there is an immediate requirement of over 15,000 additional trained personnel in star hotels.
According to the reports, tourism industry contributed 5.9 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) now and is expected to cross 8,50,000 crore to India’s GDP by 2020, he said.
Training
VSU Registrar V. Narayana Reddy has said the university will provide necessary training for hospital management students on manning various units in the hospitals.
The university management held discussions with Narayana Hospitals management and will sign an MoU soon. Already, admissions for the new courses are under process by the Directorate of Admissions, Sri Venkateswara University for the past few days and there is a good demand for the new courses, said the Registrar.
