Science meet held
Senior science teachers called for strengthening the life science education right from school level to inculcate interest and inquisitiveness and develop passion and excitement for science as career, at a symposium on “Contemporary Challenges in Undergraduate & Graduate Life-Science Education.”
It was organised by Directorate of Academic Audit, Osmania University, in collaboration with Andhra Pradesh Council for Science and Technology. Declining enrolment in Life Science courses and shortage of skills sets among the graduates affecting their employability were the key concerns of the symposium. William Wood, distinguished Professor of Biology University of Colorado, Boulder (USA), who spoke through video conferencing focused on student-centric teaching learning process. P. Jayaprakash Rao, Vice-Chairman, APSCHE, who chaired a panel discussion wanted life science education to be strengthened right from school level. The panel also favoured flexibility at plus 2 stage for study of science courses and scholarships for the students to take up life science course and appropriate curricular and pedagogical changes at Degree level with right skill mix for employability of graduates. Prominent resource persons including P.S. Sastry, Emeritus Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, K. Janardhan Reddy, Principal, University College of Science, OU, S.P.K. Naidu, (Special Chief Secretary, Government of AP and (Sandhya Chintala, Director, Country Head, Education Initiatives, NASSCOM also shared their views.
Shobanaditya from Dept. of Biochemistry and Organising Secretary of the symposium and C. Vishnuvardhan Reddy, Director, Academic Audit Cell and Convenor of the symposium also spoke.
