B.Ed English from RIESI
With a view to producing quality English language teachers for high schools across the country, the Regional Institute of English, South India (RIESI), will be offering B.Ed English, a one-year degree programme, at its premises in Jnanabharathi campus in Bangalore.
According to RIESI Director P. Mani, the programme is not only affiliated to Bangalore University, but is also recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education. RIESI, which is an autonomous institute run jointly by the governments of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, will be admitting around 100 candidates to the course during its first year. The last date for sending in applications is August 31. Out of the intake ceiling of 100, a total of 16 seats each have been reserved for the member States — Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The remaining 20 seats can be filled by candidates from all over India. The selection of candidates will be carried out through an entrance test to be conducted by RIESI.
The eligibility is B.A. or B.Sc. with a minimum of 55 per cent in English language, besides an aggregate of 50 per cent. “Right now, most high schools are making do with B.Ed-passed candidates with English as one of the two electives to teach English in their institutions. We are even working out a proposal to offer the students placement and have already received a good response from private English medium schools,” Venkateshwaran, senior faculty of RIESI and Head of the proposed B.Ed English programme, said.
RIESI, set up as a society as early as 1963, has been offering in-service training programmes for primary and secondary school English language teachers, besides diploma programmes in distance education. More information can be obtained from 080-23218452 and 23213243 or www.riesi.co.in
