IGNOU launches six-month course in poultry farming

RICH POTENTIAL: The course from IGNOU and Suguna Poultry Farm offers hands-on experience for ten days.
A six-month ‘Certificate Programme in Poultry Farming’ was launched by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in collaboration with leading broiler producer, Suguna Poultry Farm Limited, as a part of mission to create livelihood opportunities for needy individuals.
The programme aims to impart basic knowledge/technical proficiency in poultry breeding, housing, management and nutrition, develop human resources and create awareness about employment opportunities in the poultry sector.
“This course will underline the commitment of IGNOU to the goals of National Skills Mission. It will provide hands-on field experience to the entrepreneurs in poultry field,” said M. Shanmugham, Regional Director, IGNOU Regional Centre, Madurai, launching the course on October 26.
The study material for the programme is available in English medium and it would be translated into Tamil also. Dr. Shanmugham stated that poultry farming is a major livelihood activity for thousands of farmers in various districts in Tamil Nadu and this particular course would be beneficial to farming community in enhancing their skills.
Persons who have passed Class VIII can enrol in this programme and there is no age limit for the learners. According to Dr. Shanmugham, the six-month certificate course would be offered initially in English and the process of translating study materials into Tamil is now under way. The programme fee is Rs.2,500. (For ST students, the fee is Rs.550). The university’s target groups are rural youth, women, farmers and entrepreneurs involved in the poultry sector.
About the course content, Dr. Shanmugham said the certificate programme has five courses: Introduction to poultry farming, poultry housing and management, poultry feeds and feeding, poultry healthcare and biosecurity measures, and poultry farm training to the students for 10 days. Besides, the course gives enough importance to practicals.
Explaining the synergy between IGNOU and Suguna Poultry Farm Limited, the Regional Director says that the university will give certificate while the learners can undergo farm training in any of the Suguna Poultry farms in Tamil Nadu.
Admission for the January 2010 session is on. Prospectus-cum-application form (Rs.100) is available at the IGNOU Regional Centre in Madurai and filled-in applications along with a demand draft for the prescribed fee should be submitted on or before November 20.
