NITs asked to prepare vision paper

R. KRISHNAMOORTHY

A directive to ascertain how to attract talent and how research could be fostered.

The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has asked all 20 National Institutes of Technology to come out with a vision statement specifying how they could build their brand image to attract talent from within the country and abroad, and their preparedness to set up campuses abroad.

Citing India’s high growth and booming middle class warranting enormous requirement for professional courses and graduate programmes, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal has asked the NITs to incorporate in their vision how they propose to expand, charter a unique eco-system for themselves, and pay emphasis towards greater research, doctoral, and post-doctoral work.

At a recent meeting of NITs’ Council that had the participation of P. Agrawal, secretary, Department of Higher Education; N.K. Sinha, joint secretary; chairmen of Boards of Governors of NITs; directors of NITs; UGC chairman, and other members of the NIT’s Council, committees on curriculum restructuring, and examination reform were constituted.

A three-member committee consisting of the directors of the NITs in Allahabad, Calicut, and Agartala will look into the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), exploring the possibility of making the examination online in addition to the regular pen and paper test being conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education at present.

The committee that has been entrusted with the responsibility of submitting a report by January 2010 will look into the structure of the entrance examination and provide opinion on whether weightage could be given to Class XII examination results.
