The Microbiology Department of Dr. NGP Arts and Science College organised a symposium on “Antimicrobial Resistance and Drug Discovery”. Kulbushan Sharma, Advisor, World Health Organisation, was the chief guest. He reinforced the fight against the five deadliest diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, pneumonia, cholera and HIV.
As diseases were becoming increasingly resistant to the arsenal of available drugs, the spectra of incurable infectious diseases loomed large, he added.
The NSS units of Avinashilingam University for Women organised a free eye camp for students and staff in collaboration with the Lotus Eye Care Hospital.
As many as 1,000 students were tested in a day and a total of 3,700 were tested in three days.
Doctors from the hospital also briefed students on taking precautions on keeping eyes healthy. They were also informed on the various latest technologies to keep eyes pain-free and spectacle-free.
The Department of Business Management of Nehru Arts and Science College conducted a seminar on “Recent Trends in Capital Market.”
More than 200 students and faculty from 15 colleges from various states participated and presented papers. S. Sudalaimuthu, faculty member, Bharathiar University, inaugurated the seminar. Other resource persons spoke on related topics.

The Department of MBA of Dr. SNS Rajalakshmi College of Arts and Science organised a visit to the Home of Hope International as part of its extension activities.
The home housed 230 orphan boys. A general health check up and individual blood grouping were done for the boys.
The blood grouping was sponsored by the Lions’ Club of Coimbatore.
The Association “Tektronix ‘09” of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of Coimbatore Institute of Engineering and Information Technology was launched recently.
M. Krishnaswamy, Programme Director, Indian Remote Sensing and Small Satellite Systems, ISRO, Bangalore, was the chief guest. He elaborated about the technicalities involved in the various stages of Chandrayaan - 1.
The School of Management of SNS College of Engineering organised “Meet the CEO”. Ravi Jagannathan, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, 3i Infotech Consumer Service Limited, Bangalore, interacted with the students. He instilled in the students the qualities that were essential to become a CEO. He said even those who did not possess an MBA degree could become a CEO, if he had strategic thinking ability and people management techniques.
Kathir School of Management was inaugurated recently. D. Gunasekaran, Registrar, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, addressed the students and said that though engineering education had leapfrogged, the growth of management education in the country was lagging behind. K.A. Sengottaiyan, former State Transport Minister, presided over the function.
The NSS units of Sri Ramalinga Sowdambigai College of Science and Commerce organised an eye screening camp in collaboration with The Eye Foundation. More than 300 students participated in the camp and were checked for problems. Those who were detected with problems and defective vision were issued with concession cards for further treatment at the hospital.
The PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research celebrated its annual day and graduation ceremony recently. G. Rangaswamy, Managing Trustee, PSG and Sons’ Charities, was the chief guest. He pointed out the advancements and expansions going on in the medical profession and the vital role being played by young medical graduates in shaping the health care of the country. Memorial gold medals were given away to meritorious candidates.
The RVS Institute of Management Studies and Research organised a placement training programme for final year MBA students. It was conducted by Vertical Eye, a life skill training foundation. Tips on interview, grooming, etiquette, manners, resume writing, social graces and its importance, body languages, etc., were taught to the students. They were also given various projects to work on and topics to prepare for group discussion.
The NSS units of Kongunadu Arts and Science College in collaboration with the Lions’ Club of Coimbatore Elite and Vellakinaru Government Primary Health Centre conducted a free blood donation camp.
More than 50 units of blood was collected and donated to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.
NSS Day was observed by students of the Tejaa Sakthi Institute of Technology for Women in association with Siruthuli.
The members of Siruthuli joined hands with the students and planted saplings in the college.
Students were made aware of the environmental degradation caused by use of plastics, danger of public apathy towards environmental problems and the use and throw culture of consumerism.
The School of Hotel Management and Catering Science of AJK College of Arts and Science organised a workshop on “Non-alcoholic Beverages”. Students were taught the preparation of varieties of tea, coffee, milk-based drinks, mocktails, etc.
The workshop was organised to introduce the students to the world of the forgotten non-alcoholic beverages.
More than 100 students from hotel management courses from various colleges in Tamil Nadu and Kerala attended.
