Grand start: The inaugural session of a national seminar on ‘Modern trends in chemistry’ at Thiagarajar College.
Home Science College and Research Institute celebrated World Food Day on the theme ‘Achieving food security in time of crisis’ at Vowalthottam. P. Banumathi, Dean, in her presidential address, highlighted the need to strike a balance between food production and distribution to achieve nutrition security. In a land of contrasts of both over nutrition and under nutrition, which was mainly attributed to poverty, it was the right time to make efforts to empower the needy through nutrition education and income generating activities. K. Vairavan, Dean, Agricultural College and Research Institute, the chief guest, in his address, stressed the need to refocus attention on judicious planning and consumption of nutritious, locally available foods. The Dean reiterated that appropriate post-harvest technologies played a key role in the prevention of food spoilage and wastage which was imperative to achieve food security. R. Petchiammal, self-help group leader of Vowalthottam, and Jeyarani of Shepard Social Service Workers addressed the gathering. M.R. Premalatha, Head, Department of Family Resource Management, and M. Muthiah Manoharan, Head, Department of Home Science Extension, delivered lectures. S. Amutha, Head, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, welcomed the gathering and G. Hemalatha proposed a vote of thanks.

The Post Graduate and Research Department of Chemistry, Thiagarajar College, organised a two-day national seminar on ‘Modern trends in chemistry.’ P.T. Perumal of Central Leather Research Institute, in his inaugural address, spoke on the various ways and means of getting funds from the CSIR. Uma Kannan, secretary, in her presidential address, emphasised the importance of framing need-based syllabi and teaching chemistry with social relevance.
R. Rajagovindasamy, Principal, welcomed the gathering. K. Pitchumani of Madurai Kamaraj University, S.N. Jaisankar of CLRI, H. Suryaprakash Rao of Pondicherry University, Aayaghosh of National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, P. Ramamurthy, Director, National Centre for Ultrafast Processes, M. Palaniandavar of Bharathidasan University and N. Chandrakumar of Indian Institute of Technology-Madras were the resource persons. Nearly 130 participants from 25 colleges and five universities took part in the seminar. A. Suganthi, convener, proposed a vote of thanks.

The Department of Botany and Biotechnology organised a lecture on ‘Conservation of forest genetic resources’ in which B. Gurudev Singh, Head, Forest Genetics Division, Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Coimbatore, emphasised the need for preserving the rich biodiversity of Western Ghats and Himalayas. Forest cover was dwindling due to illicit felling of trees, mining and construction activities, shifting of cultivation areas by nomads and over exploitation of forest trees for medicinal and industrial purposes, he said. India had 18 per cent forest cover and there was an urgent need to enhance it to 33 per cent with quality trees. K. Santhaguru, Head, Department of Botany and Biotechnology, welcomed the gathering and R. Sekar proposed a vote of thanks.
An inter-collegiate seminar on ‘Network security’ was conducted by the Department of Computer Science in which K. Kuppusamy of Alagappa University delivered a lecture on ‘Network security – challenges and solutions.’ Students presented technical papers on 3G mobile technology and e-learning. N. Hemavathi welcomed the gathering and M. Magizh Malar proposed a vote of thanks.
The Department of Tamil Thiagarajar College a seminar for research scholars in which research papers were presented by C. Lingajothi and R. Sasikumar. G. Gnanasambandan presided. P. Muthulakshmi proposed a vote of thanks.
The Department of Business Administration organised an intercollegiate seminar on ‘The impact of mergers and acquisition on corporate growth.’ S. Ramamoorthy, chartered accountant, spoke about the different types of mergers and their success rate. As many as 76 papers were presented from various colleges in Tamil Nadu. N. Rajasekar, Head of the department, welcomed the participants. P. Vijay Ananth and J. Durai Karthivelan of Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi, bagged the first prize among PG students. At the UG level, the first prize was won by Sathiya Raman and S. Gokul of Sri Sankara Arts College, Kancheepuram. C. Jothibaskaran Mohan proposed a vote of thanks.
The Department of Botany conducted a training programme for members of self-help groups (SHGs) on ‘Sustainable income generation through training on production and application of biofertilizers and vermicompost.’
K. Rajendran, training co-ordinator, explained how long-term sustainability could be achieved in agriculture through use of low-cost farm-grown inputs. Members of women SHGs from Madurai and Sivaganga districts participated in the programme. Professors from Thiagarajar College, Saraswathi Narayanan College and Lady Doak College of Madurai; Bharathidasan University and Alagappa University gave practical training in production, mass cultivation, application and use of biofertilizers.

The Department of Social Sciences of Lady Doak College conducted a regional consultation on ‘Rethinking Sociologically’ for faculty of social sciences from various educational institutions. Ananta Kumar Giri, Associate Professor, Madras Institute of Development Studies, was the resource person. Caroline Nesabai, Head , Department of Social Sciences, welcomed the gathering.
The purpose of the consultation was to discuss the reduced significance of the subject of sociology in the current scenario of increased commercialisation.
The resource person expounded that the reason for the dying significance of the subject was because of the increased consumeristic spirit and also the breakdown of family systems. He emphasised that practitioners of social sciences should evince an interest towards revitalising the subject and also give emphasis to rekindling the interest of students towards the subject.

Activities of the English Literary Association of Saraswathi Narayanan College for the academic year were inaugurated by T.K.N. Balu, former Head of the Department of English, Presidency College, Chennai. N. Senthil, Head, Department of English, welcomed the gathering. K.K. Natarajan, Principal in-charge, presided over the function.
In his address, Dr. Balu stressed the need for language fluency and compared the nuances of English with other Indian languages such as Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu. He also elaborated on the American and British styles of utterances. R. Visalakshi Thangamani proposed a vote of thanks.

A series of inter-collegiate events was conducted at Madurai Sivakasi Nadars Pioneer Meenakshi Women’s College, Poovanthi, recently in which teams from Madurai, Sivaganga and Devakottai took part. The first event was organised by the Department of Tamil ‘Mathura Meena Vizha.’ The Department of Computer Science and Software conducted ‘Technovat – 09.’ The Department of Mathematics organised ‘Pio Maths – 09.’ Splendid 09 was organised by the Department of Commerce. This was followed by ‘Phoenix ‘09’ organised by the Department of IT and BCA.
The college committee members, J. Ashok, G. Elangovan, T.S.P.K. Kanthavel, M. Rajesh and P. Ponrajan, distributed prizes to the winners.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti, organised a two-day national seminar on ‘Futuristic Approach in nano technology for electronics engineering.’ It was inaugurated by V. R. K. Moorthy of Indian Institute of Technology-Madras. The founder-chairman, S. Mohamed Jaleel, presided.
Vasant Naidu welcomed the gathering. Sheela Berchmans, R. Srinivasan and S. Syed Azim of Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi; G. Chandrasekaran of Central University, Puducherry; A. Pradeep of Periyar Government Arts College, Cuddalore, and D. Sri Ramkumar of National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, were the resource persons.
Mr. Jaleel distributed certificates to the participants at the valedictory session. A. Merline proposed a vote of thanks.
IBM conducted the Database 2 (DB2) certification programme at the institute. S. Mowri Kumar, Senior Technical Consultant, conducted the technical sessions for CSE, ECE, IT and M.Sc. students. M. Sheerin Banu, Dean, welcomed the participants. A. Senthil Kumar, Principal, addressed the students.
The importance of personality development and the latest trends in the industry were highlighted by Peer Mohamed Sardhar, HR Manager, Coastal Energen, at a meeting organised for Electrical and Electronics Engineering students of the college. S.P. Umayal, Dean, welcomed the gathering and P. Roopa proposed a vote of thanks.
