Understanding cinema better
It might be one of those songs in the movie that you strongly feel is out of place or the plot of the film that seems annoyingly slack to you. If you think you know what goes wrong in a film and what it takes to be a blockbuster, then there are a string of options to do so with a professional touch.
Film appreciation courses have had an early start in the country and the top-slot film institutes all made sure the appreciation course got featured in their syllabi. For instance, the National Film Archive of India, Pune, has been conducting a four-week Film Appreciation Course since the 1970s. The course, in collaboration with Film and Television Institute of India, has been attracting people from all quarters who either review films as a profession or out of passion. The participants of the course get to see some of the best Indian and world films. Chennai has been starved of a reputed film appreciation course, despite the presence of a handful of private film institutes. Sensing the growing demand for such a course in this part of the country, the Institute of Distance Education of University of Madras will soon come up with a course on film appreciation. The course, to be offered jointly with a foreign university, will introduce a new perspective to the way people rate the films. “We have plans to tie up with top-slot universities and bring out a competitive syllabus for the course. It is still in the planning stage. We hope to introduce the course shortly,” said its Director G. Mohanram said. Meanwhile, the Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram of the Department of Arts and Culture has proposed to launch week-long drama appreciation courses shortly.
