Options galore for mechanical engineering students

My son is in his final year of B.E Mechanical Engineering. Please tell us about his further study options.

Mechanical engineering is a vast discipline. The topics covered in bachelor's level study of mechanical engineering are the core concepts on which more specialised branches of mechanical engineering are based. So after BE / B.Tech in mechanical engineering, students have the privilege to choose from a number of options to pursue their higher studies. Some details are as below:

Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad, offers M. Tech in petroleum engineering.

The eligibility criterion is a bachelor's degree in chemical / mechanical/ petroleum / petrochemical engineering or its equivalent with at least 55 per cent marks.

The admission is based on GATE score, marks obtained in qualifying degree and interview.

If sufficient number of GATE students have not applied for the course, the remaining seat will be filled by non-GATE students based on their performance at entrance examination. For details, log on to www.ismdhanbad. ac.in

University of Petroleum and Energy Studies offers M. Tech in petroleum exploration and piping engineering.

The eligibility criteria for these programmes are minimum 60 per cent marks at Higher and Senior Secondary level and B.Tech / M.Sc in relevant branch with minimum 60 per cent marks.

SRM University, Kancheepuram district, offers M.Tech in environmental engineering, computer aided design, computer integrated manufacturing and robotics.

The admission is based on performance at entrance examination conducted by the university or GATE. For details, log on to www.srmuniv.ac.in

Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, Mumbai, offers M.Tech in mechanical engineering with machine design, thermal engineering and automobile engineering as specialisations.

The institute offers M.Tech in production engineering also. For non- GATE candidates, admission is based on performance at entrance examination and viva voce. For details, log on to www.vjti.ac.in

Vellore Institute of Technology University offers M.Tech in automotive engineering, computer aided design/ computer aided manufacturing, energy and environmental engineering, mechatronics and automotive electronics.

All mechanical engineers with at least 50 per cent marks in the qualifying examination and with a consistent overall academic record are eligible for the course.

Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (deemed university), Allahabad, offers M.Tech in materials science and engineering, environmental engineering, structural engineering, computer aided design and manufacturing, design of process machines , product design and development and production engineering.

The minimum percentage of marks, the candidate must have secured in qualifying examination is 60.

The admission is based on performance at Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). For details, log on to www.mnnit.ac.in

I am doing my B.Tech in I.T. I want to do MBA. Am I eligible for the course? Please tell me about the specialisations I can opt for.

The eligibility criterion for most of the MBA and its equivalent programmes like two-year postgraduate diploma in management is graduation in any discipline with at least 50 per cent marks.

So you are eligible to take up the course if you secure 50 p.c. marks in your B.Tech.

Also, you are eligible to take up most of the specialisations like HR, finance and marketing offered by the different institutes across the country.

However, as you are from engineering background, you may be interested in relevant specialisations. The details are as follows:

CDAC, Noida, offers MBA software enterprise management.
