CVR college student bags three gold medals

Harsh H. Shah, a graduate of CVR College of Engineering, who won three gold medals from JNTUH for the batch of 2009, was felicitated by his college here on Saturday.
A student of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) stream he was awarded a gold medal for the best outgoing student of CSE out of all JNTUH affiliated colleges with 86.90 per cent of marks. He was also given two Endowment medals for his particular achievements in the CSE stream. He won the Late Professor G. Purushottam memorial Endowment medal for best outgoing student with highest marks in mathematics in constituent and affiliated colleges, and the Dr. MD. Vizarath Rasool Khan Endowment medal for B.Tech (CSE) 1st rank in JNTUH affiliated colleges.
He received the medals from Governor N. D. Tiwari at the JNTUH Convocation held here on Friday. Speaking to media persons on Saturday, the young achiever said, “It hasn't fully sunk in yet. Raghava sir called and told me that I had won three gold medals and then everything happened so quickly. I just want to say that this has been possible because of my parents, the CVR management, and the CSE faculty. It's not my effort alone but theirs too.”
His parents, who were also present, were at a loss for words.

Johan Galtung, Founder of world's first Peace Research Institute in Oslo delivered a lecture on “Democratic Development: As Event, Experience, Myth, Metaphor and Practice in South Asia,” as a part of the distinguished lecture series at the University of Hyderabad.
Prof. Galtung spoke on the issue, citing examples of the developmental models of various cultures. He spoke for a model that draws the best from all. Prof. Galtung is regarded as the father of modern peace research and education, having founded the world's first Peace Research Institute in Oslo in 1959, which remains one of the leading institutes of its kind. His training programmes have been provided to various UN missions, as well as government officials, NGOs, and journalists around the world. Prof. Galtung is also the recipient of many distinguished awards.

William D. Dar, Director General, ICRISAT has said that climate change is real and its impact would seriously jeopardise food and livelihood security and the underscored the need to be in all preparedness to cope with the consequences of the change, especially in the regions of rain dependant agriculture. He expressed these views while delivering lecture on ‘Semi-Arid Tropics and Climate Change: Research nd Policy Solutions,' organised by ANGRAU as a part of the sixth Foundation Lecture in memory of J. Raghotham Reddy.
While suggesting the need to rationally plan the future course of research to minimise the adverse impact and maximise the favourable effect of the climate change he cautioned that technology alone would not do good in the absence of helpful policy environment.
The occasion was also to honour various achievers in the fields related to agriculture. Anuradha Desai, Chairperson, Venkateshwara Hatcheries was recognised as the Outstanding Woman Entrepreneur in Agriculture for her significant contribution to the growth of India's poultry industry while Rashmi Thakrar, Chairman, Tilda Rice-Group received the Outstanding Achiever in Agriculture Award for his significant contribution to the growth and development of the country's basmati rice export. M.V. Reddi was honoured for the development of the widely popular quality rice variety Samba Mahsuri.
SVVU
Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University (SVVU) is actively working on the Rs.9.43 crore project received under the Central government's ‘Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana' (RKVY) last year. Under the five-year project, the varsity has received Rs.8.43 crore for the first year.
The project will take up modern biotechnological research on Ongole bulls, develop region-specific sheep varieties, set up a piggery unit, study disease management in fish and promote ‘Rajashri' poultry variety to increase the household income of those living Below the Poverty Line (BPL). At a meeting conducted here on Thursday, Director of Research Md. Hafeez announced that cold storages would also be developed in villages using renewable energy sources.
Vice-Chancellor D.V.G. Krishna Mohan announced that a team would arrive from Hyderabad shortly to estimate the progress of work conducted under RKVY.
ICBM convocation
ICBM-School of Business Excellence, Rajendranagar held its second convocation for 2006-08 and 2007-09 batch of post-graduate diploma in Management (PGDM) programme on November 14 at Birla Planetarium. The management students, alumni, faculty of ICBM and several dignitaries from Osmania University and corporate sector were present on the occasion.
Professor B. Krishna Reddy of Department of Business Management, Osmania University was the Guest of Honour while Dean of the Department of Business Management Professor V. Shekhar was the Chief Guest of the function, which was presided over by Director of ICBM Professor S. Zarar.
ICBM, which was started in 1989, offers two-year full time PGDM programme, approved by AICTE as well as two year full time MBA programme affiliated to Osmania University.
‘Focus on discipline'
N.Shiva Kumar, noted corporate trainer and IT recruiter from Bangalore, has stressed the need for students to stay disciplined to make it big in life. He was facilitating a workshop on ‘Management education for succeeding in profession' at Dr.AER MBA Colleges, Tirupati last week. Making it clear that professions played a vital role in any community due to their unique and distinct services, he said English language proficiency, communication skills and analytical skills were very essential to survive in management profession. He cautioned the students that they could never become good managers with mere knowledge of their mother tongue.
While inaugurating the workshop, former Speaker of Assembly and the college correspondent Dr. Agarala Eswara Reddi advised the budding managers to develop conceptual clarity, keep themselves updated on contemporary issues and make learning a continuous process. Principal K.Sudhakar Reddy presided over the session.
Dravidian University
Dravidian University's Telugu Department conducted a programme on ‘Bhuvana Vijayam' last week, as part of its monthly literary events.
Vice-Chancellor Cuddapah Ramanaiah delivered a talk on ‘Gurram Joshua's philosophy' which received thunderous response from the academic and student community. In fact, the students openly admitted that they had been exposed for the first time to the beauty of Telugu padyas (prosodic poems) and to the philosophy of Joshua.
Prof.Ramanaiah presented Joshua as a man who stood for universal humanity by defying the barriers in the name of caste and religion and explained how Joshua could not be considered to represent a particular community, as was being widely postulated. He also highlighted his romantic sensibility by reciting a number of poems admiring the beauty of nature. The erudite scholar turned administrator also explained that Joshua had a remarkable affinity with the poetic sensibility of the noted Persian poet Omar Khayyam. The event was coordinated by Telugu HoD Budati Venkateswarlu.
In the interactive session that followed, Prof.Kumaraswamy Raju remarked that Joshua's Graveyard poems reminded one, of the Gravedigger's scene in Shakespeare's Hamlet, while Prof. Bhaktavatsala Reddy thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his eloquent talk. Deans Muralikrishna (School of Humanities) and Subbachary (Academic) were present.
