Recent trends in open source software discussed

Expert talk: Madhusudan Atre, president and managing director, Applied Materials India Private Limited, Bangalore speaking during the inauguration of new academic session at Amrita School of Business in Coimbatore.

A welcome function was held for the freshers of Amrita School of Business, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Madhusudhan Atre, President and Managing Director, Applied Materials India Private Limited, Bangalore, was the chief guest. S.C. Sarkar, Vice-President, Larsen & Toubro Limited, Coimbatore, and M. Manickam, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Sakthi Sugars Limited, Coimbatore, were among the other speakers who addressed the students.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Hindustan Institute of Technology conducted a workshop on “Open Source Software”. S. Sathiyakumar, Director of Victory Vision, Coimbatore, was the chief guest. He addressed students on recent trends in open source software such as PHP, My SQL, Phython. Head of the Department D. Loganathan welcomed the gathering and Principal T. Ravichandran gave the presidential address.

The Department of Commerce of Sree Narayana Guru College conducted a valedictory function recently. P.K. Manoharan, Dean, College Development Council, Bharatiar University, was the chief guest. He spoke on the importance of competitive examinations and insisted that students develop soft skills in college. Principal of the college Asha Balagangadharan gave the presidential address and Mohanasundaram of the Commerce Department read the annual report.

Hindustan College of Education conducted the Graduation Day for the students of 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 batches. Secretary of Hindustan Institution Sarasuwathi Khannaiyann inaugurated the ceremony and Principal of the college S. Rajammal welcomed the gathering. Registrar of Bharatiar University P. Thirumalvalavan awarded the degree certificates to the students. An alumni meet was organised after the ceremony.

A national-level management meet ARTHASHASTRA '11 was organised at SNS College of Engineering recently. A. Selvakumar, Chairman of ZIPS Research Foundation, Coimbatore, was the chief guest. He spoke on the need for creative leadership and an innovative mind for success in business. Over 300 students from 40 institutions across the State participated in events such as business quiz, Ad zap and corporate fashion show. Chairman of the college S.N. Subbramaniam delivered the presidential address in the presence of the Principal V.K. Shunmughanaathan, Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Zachariah and Head of the Department of Management Studies E. Venugopal.

The Department of Management Studies of Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College conducted a special lecture by Chief Executive Officer of Active Media P. Ramakrishnan on “New Media Marketing”. He spoke on the trends in digital advertising through social networks and virtual media, the attitude of Indian customers towards new media marketing and how advertisers could create awareness among the customers and induce them to adapt to the digital world. His lecture threw light on job opportunities for MBA students in the field of advertising and sales. The lecture was followed by an interactive session with the students.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of CMS College of Engineering and Technology organised a guest lecture on “Discrete Electronic Concepts and Integrated Circuits” by Selvaraju Muthusamy, Director of Hands-On Technologies, Coimbatore. He spoke on the recent advances in the field of Integrated Circuits, Electronic Components, Semiconductor Devices, TTL and CMOS devices. Principal H. Abdul Rauf gave the welcome address.

Sri Ranganathar Institute of Polytechnic College celebrated its Annual Day and Sports Day recently. Mohanasundaram, Principal of Jansons Institute of Technology, was the chief guest. In his address he spoke to the students on the need for inculcating moral values in addition to academic achievements. Arangaraju, Academic Director, presided over the function and Principal Kothandaraman read the annual report. Technical Director Elangovan gave a special address and distributed the prizes.

The Departments of Commerce, Commerce CA and Corporate Secretaryship of Dr. N.G.P Arts and Science College jointly conducted a guest lecture on “Taxation and e-filing” by J. Pranesan.

The chief resource persons were chartered accountant J. Pranesan and engineer J. Sathyanarayanan who spoke on the importance of Tally and the scope of commerce in India respectively.

The first year students of MCA and M.Sc. Computer Science of RVS College of Arts and Science visited Dr. Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), Anaikatti, on a trekking programme recently. Francis Xavier, Director of Outreach Foundation India, was the instructor and trainer who briefed the students on ways to behave and communicate in the reserve forest area. First year MCA student Ranjith marvelled the group by handling a couple of snakes and demonstrating the ways to deal with them. Following the trek, the students visited the GASS museum situated in the campus of the Forest College.

A blood donation camp was organised by the National Service Scheme students of Kathir College of Engineering.

The event was co-ordinated by the blood bank of K.G. Hospital. Over 100 students and faculty donated blood. Chairman E.S. Kathir in the presence of Principal G. Duraisamy inaugurated the camp.

cleanliness drive:NSS students of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University participating in a camp held at Somaiyampalayam.

A NSS special camp was held at Somaiyampalayam Panchayat by 263 volunteers from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The camp was inaugurated by Dean (Agriculture) A. Rajarajan in the presence of the President of panchayat P. Ramalingam, ward members of Kalappanayakkanpalayam and Kasthurinayakkanpalayam. The concept of ‘Sitroor Sevai', as promoted by NSS, was taken as the theme for providing services related to health, environment, employment, literacy, culture and sports. Vice-Chancellor P. Murugesa Boopathi gave the valedictory address at the end of the seven-day camp.

SNS College of Engineering held the presentation of the annual report of The Club of Excellence recently. Following that, the activities in the ‘Leadership Camp' were highlighted. There were discussions on global warming, deforestation and increase in human population. Director of SNS Institutions Nalin Vimalkumar gave a special address in the presence of Principal of the college V.K. Shanmughanaatham.

A seminar on “Future Banking” by Chief Manager of Lakshmi Vilas Bank, Ganapathy Branch, S. Hariharan was conducted at Sankara College of Science and Commerce. He spoke on virtual banking, e-banking, Automatic Teller Machine and online banking. Secretary of Sankara Educational Institutions T.P. Ramachandran and Joint Secretary Sandhya Ramachandran presided over the function.

A seminar on Protection of Environment was conducted by the Department of Commerce of V.L.B. Janakiammal College of Arts and Science. N. Rajkumar, Principal of the college, spoke on the protection of environment. He suggested that more trees should be grown and the forest cover should be preserved. R. Sunderraj, Head of the Department, presided over the meeting.

Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Technology conducted a workshop on “Need Based Approach for Effective Teaching”. A. Ebenezer Jayakumar, Director-Academics, Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, inaugurated the workshop and handled the first session. R. Chandrasekhar, Senior Consultant, Capgemini, Bangalore, handled the second session. He said that a good teacher was always appreciated by the students for his effective teaching. The last session was handled by Jayanthasri Balakrishnan, Department of English, P.S.G. College of Arts and Science.

Government Arts College, Udumalpet, celebrated its first Graduation Day recently where 340 degrees of Arts, Science and Commerce were conferred on the students. Registrar of Bharathiar University P. Thirumalvalavan was the chief guest. In his speech, he stressed that students equip themselves with adequate knowledge for the future and apply their mind and skills for success in life.

The information technology, electronics engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science engineering associations at Angel College of Engineering and Technology were inaugurated recently. Inaugurating the mechanical association, M. Elangovan, professor of mechanical engineering department at Amrita College of Engineering, released the news letter prepared by the mechanical department in Angel College.
