The National College recently organised an orientation programme for the first year students in order to familiarise them with the practice of using library. P. Raghavan, librarian, explained the facilities available and how the students could access the learning resources including internet effectively. K. Anbarasu, principal, who presided over the function, stressed the importance of using the library in order to widen the intellectual horizon of the students. K. Raghunathan, secretary of the college, S. Senthamaraiselvi, Head of the Department of English also spoke.

The Cauvery College for Women conducted a 10-day foundation English course for the first year students with a view to equip them with basic grammatical structures. The course was designed keeping in mind the first generation learners and students from rural background aiming to make them attempt to construct simple flawless sentences at the end of the course.

Catherine Edward, Associate Professor of English, Holy Cross College, who was the resource person, stressed the need to learn as many languages as possible especially English in order to improve one's confidence. She had also explained the methodology of learning English and stated the art of using English language. V. Sujatha, principal, emphasised the need for the course. K. Rengarajan, secretary of the college, Prema Joshua, Assistant Professor of English also spoke.

Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College in Tiruchi recently organised a bridge course for all first year students and foundation course for the first year English literature students. Professor and Head, School of English and other Foreign Languages and Director, Centre for Canadian Students, who was the chief guest, explained the importance of English and advised the students to learn as many languages as possible. He pointed out that the importance of English would never diminish. Kanaka Bashyam, principal, said that the bridge and foundation courses were useful to the first year students.

The National College celebrated Hostel Freshers Day recently. V. K. Boominathan, principal, Mount Litra Zee School, who was the chief guest, motivated the students to work hard to achieve the desired goal. He also spoke about the importance of spoken English which is the need of the hour. K. Anbarasu, principal, presided over the function. Students S. Suresh Kumar and S. Muthukumar also spoke.

The Hallmark Business School recently conducted a seminar on ‘facing the future' for the MBA students in the college. Varun Veerasekaran, a topper in the Civil Services Examinations 2010, was the chief guest. He shared his experiences and success. Dr. Varun emphasised on the classroom learning and its application in the real administration. MBA graduates were more equipped to face the UPSC examination and its interview phase due to their smart work, he said, and cited a few examples of MBA graduates who completed UPSC examinations without much difficulty.

During the interaction session at the end, Dr. Varun clarified various doubts raised by the students and explained to them the strategy for preparing for the UPSC examinations.

B. Balamurugan, Director, HBS, delivered special address. K. Krishnamurthy, chairman of the college, presided over the function. P. Karthikeyan, Regional Manager, SBI, delivered special lecture on time management.
