Roja Koottam
Bhumika and Srikanth... the refreshing lead pair of "Roja Koottam".
IF HIS performance in ``Roja Koottam'' is anything to go by, Srikanth, the hero, is bound to go places.
Oscar Films' ``Roja Koottam'' has a refreshing lead pair Srikanth and Bhumika. It is a routine romantic sojourn all right but there is an attempt at being different.
Written and directed by Sasi, the story revolves round Ilango (Srikanth), his friend Sriram (Akash) and Mano (Bhumika). It is a tale of triangular love but for a change it is the hero's love that goes unrequited though on the lines of the recent "Shahjahan" till the climax.
Circumstances force Ilango to take Mano under his wings. He gives her shelter till Sriram returns from abroad. Sriram comes back but his familial leanings make him give up his romantic interlude.
If Radhika and Raghuvaran come out with a dignified, underplayed portrayal as Ilango's parents, Rekha's unwarranted belligerence as Mano's mother, only evokes disgust.
Quite a few instances seem to stress that the police is an enemy of the public. It is only Devan's role as a police inspector, that make things appear better.
Raghuvaran looks absolutely jobless in the climax. Also the scene is so stretched that it tests your patience especially because the end is so very obvious.
Vivek's comedy makes one laugh but only in fits and starts. Otherwise, the same kind of intonation and voice modulation make the dialogue and repartees stale.
Composer Bharadwaj whose ``Pandavar Bhoomi'' numbers still ring in our ears, does not make much impact in ``Roja Koottam'' mainly because some of the songs are so much similar to the ones you have heard before. The title song is an exception.
Film lyricists have to churn out romantic songs in film after film but the way Vairamuthu brings in varied imaginative thoughts and strings them into beautifully blended words, has been a wonder. ``Roja Koottam'' is yet another example.
The `voice' of Bhumika (Savitha?) has done a commendable job in ``Roja Koottam''.Exotic locations well picturised by Paneerselvam, a gentle looking Bhumika who spells class, art by Thotta Tharani and the youthfulness throughout are the other attractions of ``Roja Koottam''.
The sudden blossoming of roses towards the end is too contrived as if incorporated just to justify the title.
