Ice Age
"Sid, Manny and Diego ... they make an odd trio in Ice Age".
THREE ENTIRELY different creatures come together by chance and take us through a whole lot of exciting adventures, with a baby in their midst adding to the thrill, in Twentieth Century Fox's ``Ice Age''.
This all-digital animated feature film is a character-oriented comedy that will have your kids in splits. Enjoyable throughout, is how the film can be best described.
A woolly mammoth called Manny, saves an inert sloth named Sid, from two belligerent rhinos. Manny does not want Sid's company but the clever Sid is difficult to shake off. A mother who escapes with her baby from her tribe of humans when attacked by a pack of tigers, leaves the child near Manny and Sid, and dies. Thus the group expands. Diego, the tiger, is sent by his clan to fetch the baby alive. So the conniving creature befriends them and joins the band. They are the oddest quartet now. Soon an emotional bond is formed, and one rushes to save the other in times of crises. Their mission is to return the baby to its father, which they accomplish eventually. Set in the prehistoric Ice Age fraught with natural dangers, the flick has plenty of action, humour and emotion.
Scrat (a blend of squirrel and rat) is the brat who sets the ball rolling. He merely tries to save up an acorn for the winter but ends up creating a crack in the glacier! The mass begins to move, thereby bringing about the ice age. Cropping up at the most unexpected moments throughout the film, Scrat is a cute value addition.
Director Chris Wedge's astuteness in lighting has already won him an Oscar for his short animation film ``Bunny". ``Ice Age'' is yet another example of Wedge's superiority in lighting software.
Excellent music score is another highpoint of ``Ice Age''.
The reactions, sentiments, expressions and sense of humour of the animals are so real that after a point you forget that they are digitally animated creatures.
Especially the sense of humour — even as you wonder why Diego the tiger does not try to eat up Sid, he walks away with his head held high stating, ``I don't eat junk food''.
``Ice Age'' has already kindled the interest of kids this summer, when it found a prominent place in the U.S. Top Ten list on the Star Movies channel recently.
