Jazzy jute items
The jute items... connoisseur's delight.
WITH A special jute counter now open at Poompuhar to showcase Grama jute products, the golden fibre has finally got a permanent niche in the State Handicrafts Emporium. The event also marks another milestone in the National Jute Diversification Board's programme of training in jute weaving and manufacturing jute products given to rural clusters in Tamil Nadu, which will now have an increased and continuous work opportunities.
Grama products are value-added jute lifestyle items crafted out of the fine quality jute woven at the clusters. While some of the items are made by rural artisans trained at the clusters, many are handcrafted, designed and developed in Chennai with an eye on chic and functional use.
The Grama jute counter has a wide and pleasing range. Gift bags and jute satchels catch the eye with their striking colour co-ordination and simplicity. The range of handbags, clutch bags and shopping bags are designed in contemporary styles. The jute yarn in the weft and thread in the warp weaves are particularly compelling and come in golden-hued check weaves, stripes and so on. Although dyed jute has been used in the items and also a combination of jute and dyed cloth, the beauty of the golden fibre comes through in each of the high quality Grama products.
A range of colourful cushions in fine jute with value additions such as block printing, interweaving with korai grass etc. is the other attraction at Poompuhar. Jute blinds woven with korai grass in Masland-like patterned figures is yet another innovative product being showcased. The jute counter also has gift giveaways such as attractive spectacle cases, office organisers, files and so on. The craftspersons at the rural clusters will be gradually trained in both developing and creating the new line along with training in more intricate and innovative forms of value-added jute weaves. Here is another NGO and Central Government craft programme, which will go a long way, especially with marketing help from state government agencies such as Poompuhar.
