Stunning mirrors

A piece of art...

A CHARMING panorama of India's art and craft heritage is reflected in the stunning framed mirrors currently on display at Reflexions at The Accessory Shop, 7 Wallace Gardens, 3rd Street, Chennai. The concept of beautiful mirrors as objects of art, rooted in the European Renaissance, comes alive in the exhibits with frames embellished with craft as diverse as Thanjavur art, glass painting, Madhubani, Kalamkari, palm leaf craft and abstract modern motifs. The stylised motifs and themes are typical but harmonised and in mellow colours to go with the mirrors. A mirror inset in a beautiful antique wooden double door featuring Garudas and Vaishnavite saints done in Thanjavur style stuns with its rich, mellow beauty. Celebrating the many beloved themes of `Krishna Leela', the frames picked out in black line drawings are rich with symbolism. Equally compelling are teak frames painted in gold with insets of Ganesha icons, rows of gazelle like cows and so on. The frames are exquisitely finished. They also open a whole new world for designers involved in innovative use of craft skills.
