Gurupeyarchi at Alangudi

ALANGUDI, THE tiny village on the Needamangalam-Kumbakonam road in Tiruvarur district is getting ready for Gurupeyarchi which falls on July 23 when Guru Bhagawan moves from Kadaga rasi to Simha rasi. Eight lakh people are expected to throng the temple and elaborate arrangements are being made to receive them.
Thirugnanasambandar has sung in praise of the Lord here and is the 98th temple among the 127 temples located on the southern bank of Cauvery. It is one among the 274 "Padal Petra Sthalams" in Chola Nadu. The temple was built by Amuthohar, Minister of Musukundachakravarthy who ruled Tiruvarur. The Minister was asked to share with the King the Punniya he earned by being a Siva devotee. He refused to do so and was beheaded. The King got rid of the "dosha" he thus got by worshipping Apathsahayeswaraswamy at Alangudi.
According to S. Ilango, Joint Commissioner HR and CE, laksharchana in connection with Gurupeyarchi is on at the temple since July 13. It is being held in two phases July 13-20 and July 28-August 4. Devotees can pay Rs. 100 and take part in the Laksharchana. A silver image of Gurubhagavan will be given to them along with prasadam. Special archanas will be held on July 23 and in this also devotees can take part by paying Rs. 100. Archana tickets can be had from all the branches of City Union Bank in the State and from various temples like Kapaliswarar temple at Mylapore, Chennai, Karumariamman temple at Thiruverkadu (Chennai), Jalakandeswara temple at Vellore, Jambukeswarar temple at Thiruvanaikaval, Ramanathaswamy temple at Rameswaram, Nellaiyappar temple at Tirunelveli, Kutralanathar temple at Thirukutralam,Vinayakar temple Eachanari in Coimbatore, Dandayuthapani-swamy temple at Palani, Subramanyaswamy temple at Thiruchendur, Arunachaleswarar temple at Thiruvannamalai, Padaleeswarar temple at Cuddalore,Vedaranyeswarar temple at Vedaranyam.
