Prahalada Charitram

The Alliance Francaise of Madras along with the Koothu-p-pattarai will present the Tamil play, "Prahalada Charitram," from July 22 to 31 at 7 p.m. daily as part of its Golden jubilee celebrations. The 80-minute play written by Na. Muthuswamy and directed by Israeli theatre personality, Gil Alon, will be staged at the Alliance Francaise auditorium (24, College Road, Nungambakkam, Ph: 28279803/28271477). Traditionally, "Prahalada Charitram" has been performed by the Theru-k-koothu troupes of Thanjavur and Arsuthipattu for the last 300 years. Director Gil Alon says he found many aspects which are relevant to the present day and since Theru-k-koothu is a tradition very far from what he is familiar with, he decided to give it a completely modern interpretation. The production raises various questions — "What is education? What is religion? Who is god? What is beyond reality? And how to follow your heart against all odds?"

"I had combined tradition and modernity in my play. But this production is totally modern," says Muthuswamy. According to the director, "The play written by Muthuswamy, the actor's inner world that has been expressed during the introductory workshops and my own point of view were the inspiration that led to this theatre of images that present `Prahalada Charitram' in a way never seen before."
