Reposeful

KALAKSHETRA G. S. Rajan's flute recital was reposeful all the way. Speed and glamour, which appear to be the buzzwords with the current-day flautists, was totally absent in Rajan's essay, and came as a refresher to the vintage rasikas at Hamsadhwani.

Opening the concert with a varnam in Vasantha, he played the popular "Vatapi Ganapathim" (Hamsadhwani - Dikshitar) with mild swaras. Swati Tirunal's "Jaya Jaya Padmanabha" (Manirang), "Mamavasada" (Nattukuranji), "Jagadhodharana", "Krishna Nee Begane Baro", Mali's favourite, "Chinnanadena" (Kalanidhi), and "Vaishnava Janato" were rendered effectively. Viju S. Anand (violin) and Sumod Sridhar (mridangam) gave subtle support. — KSR
