Compelling craft items

Kondapalli toys from Krishna district ...

WHILE LEPAKSHI'S heritage collection exhibition (currently on at Best Seller Hall, 43/1, Besant Avenue Road, Adyar) mirrors the varied craft skills of Andhra Pradesh, the Rajasthan exhibition at Sri Sankara Hall, TTK Road, showcases handcrafted products from all over the country.

The exhibits vary from the best in traditional skills to the run-of-the-mill. However, there is something to suit every pocket and taste at both venues. Aesthetics, superior craftsmanship and functionality merge well in some of the items on display. The serrated leather puppet craft of Andhra Pradesh has been adapted to craft some outstanding wall hangings and lampshades, while Sankara Hall has a spread of dazzling neem wood carvings from Andhra Pradesh.

Painted in harmonious colours the neem wood pieces range from mirror frames to imposing wall hangings, wall brackets and doors. Both exhibitions have a variety of terracotta items on show both for the house and garden. Aligarh's innovative brass items such as mirror frames and door-knobs are another attraction while Lepakshi has a range of ikat and jute products, Mangalagiri and Venkatagiri cottons as well as Warangal's contemporary cotton dhurries. The Lepakshi craft exhibition ends on February 29 while the Rajasthan exhibition concludes on March 3.
