Passion for namasankirtanam
HERE IS a man totally devoted to namasankirtanam. Thanjavur Thiagaraja Bhagavathar was born in the family of the guru of Saint Tyagaraja - Sonti Venkataramaniah, and he had great interest in namasankirtan right from his early age of eight. An ardent devotee of Sri Krishna, Premi Maharaj, he underwent training under Thiruvidaimarudhur Venkatrama Bhagavathar and specialised in sampradaya bhajans and conducting Radha Kalyanam and Sita Kalyanam for more than two decades.
His rendering of Gita Govindam (Ashtapadi) deserves special mention. With his knowledge of music, Sanskrit language and bhava, the rendition touches the heart of the listeners. Rare selection of Namavalis and making the listeners join the chanting of the holy names of Lord Krishna are the highlights of his style. The Bhagavathar plays an active role in the bhajan festivals conducted at Govindapuram, Thiruvisanallur and Marudhanallur Maths. His passion for namasankirtanam takes him to places across the country. He is accompanied by Seranmadevi Sri Bala Venkatakrishna Bagavathar and Nanganallur Murali Bagavathar (vocal support), Sri Rajamani (harmonium) and Sri Rajesh (mridangam). Whole-hearted involvement and support of the accompanists add great value to the bhajan. He renders bhajans on the request of various sabhas, and the general public at their houses also. He has performed 108 "Radha Kalyanams" within a year in 2002 and considers himself fortunate to have had divine blessings to perform this feat.
