Fine artistic abilities

Pushpanjali Series C.D. — Sarvambrahmamayam — Kala Prasad — Price not indicated.

KALA PRASAD, a Carnatic singer with a lot of promise, is a senior student of the late Sangeetha Kalanidhi T. Viswanathan, the reputed flute vidwan. Gopalakrishna Bharatiar's "Vazhi Maraikkudhu" in Nattakuranji and "Sarvam Brahmamayam," a Sadasiva Brahmendra hymn tuned sensitively in Kanada, provide serenity to the programme. The expansive delineation of Madhyamavati with rakti prayogas eschewing unwanted flamboyance, is more than aurally friendly, it is impressive.

"Ramakatha Sudha," a jewel among the compositions of Tyagaraja, rendered with sruti suddham, the neraval for the lyrical sequence, "Bama mani Janaki Soumitri," with appreciable quality and the swaras in the two speeds with laya exactitude are commendable forays. The violinist's alapana and swara responses give a fair indication that the artiste (name not mentioned) is a proven performer.

A Sanskrit sloka on Lord Ganesha and an ugabhoga in praise of the Lord Supreme, Vishnu, are melodic preludes to Purandaradasa's "Narayana" in Suddhadhanyasi.

The sartorial charm of "Sangeetha Samrajya" in Mohanakalyani is a charmer all the way, and Kala's interpretation of the kriti is graceful, although Lalgudi Jayaraman's imaginative chittaswaram could have done with more care in placing the swaras in their exact grooves.

Kala has fine-tuned her artistic abilities to a significant extent, leaving the listener in an enjoyable auditory zone.

The brief sketch of the Poorvikalyani song "Satre vilagi irum pillaai" and the swara passages showcase the musician's positive approach to stress the keen sensibility of Carnatic Music. — S.P.
