Dance to the maestro's laya

Priyadarshini Govind

``VADYAM THATHA Nrityam Cha Trayam Sangitamucyate" - the essence of this well-known statement is to be visualised in a creative attempt by laya exponent Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, in Siva Priya, a programme conceived and choreographed by him. Priyadarsini Govind, senior Bharatanatyam artiste is the main dancer who will partner with the laya maestro in this venture. Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha and K. G. Foundation are jointly organising this event which to be held on December 12 at the Main Hall of the Music Academy at 6.30. p.m. Sonal Mansingh, Chairman, Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, will preside over this occasion.

``This venture is an attempt at exploring the nuances of bhava, raga and tala, the extension and improvisation of these aspects, which remain the crucial base for both Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam," says Sivaraman. The kutcheri format of vocal Carnatic music is being fully explored by the mridangam vidwan and the dancer who joins to render, adapt and improvise simultaneously."

Neraval, tani avartanam, and swara elaborations of a routine vocal concert will be given equal attention with dance depiction. Also, the scope for the dancer, to use her Manodharma, especially in creating her own rhythmical details with spontaneity will be provided the mridangam accompaniment. Finally the duo join to create a synthesis of the three-fold approach to dance as visualised form of music.

``It has been a wonderful process of learning for me, during my work with this veteran mridangam vidwan," says Priyadarsini Govind, who considers it as an enriching experience.

A CD (also DVD and audio-cassette) on varnams in Bharatanatyam compiled by Priyadarsini Govind and produced by Swathi Soft Solutions will be released by Sonal Mansingh.
