Two days of Koothu
PRAKRITI FOUNDATION presents "Tamil Koothu Reassessing Tradition and Modernity," a programme of discussions, film shows, demonstrations and performances, on December 11 and 12, at Sundar Mahal, Padmavathiar Road, Jeypore Colony.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on December 11, presentations will be made by Koothu scholar from Kanchipuram Dr.Hannah De Bruine, Ethnomusicologist Dr. S.A.K. Durga, Koothu Scholar Dr. Sundar Kali followed by discussions, in the event entitled "Setting the framework." The moderator will be theatre person Bhagirathi Narayanan. "Rituals of Koothu," a session of film documentaries, (4 p.m. to 6 p.m.) will be followed by "Pathinettam Por" by Kattaikoothu Valarchi Munnetra Sangham, Kanchipuram. The Tamil feature film "Avataram," produced by actor Nasser, which depicts the life of a koothu actor, will be screened at 8 p.m.
An all night Koothu "Draupadi Vasthirabaranam" by Purisai Duraiswamy Kannappa Thambiran Paramparai Theru-k-koothu Manram, is scheduled to begin at 10 p. m. at the Corporation School playground, Conran Smith Road, Gopalapuram.
On December 12, 4 p.m., "Performers / experiences / future" will be a panel discussion by Koothu artistes Rajarathinam of Dharmapuri, Sambandam of Purisai, P. Rajagopal of Kanchipuram, theatre director N. Muthuswamy and film actor Nasser. Theatre activist Pravin will be the moderator.
"Veriattam" by students of Kattaikoothu School, Kanchipuram (5 p.m.), Koothu in contemporary theatre "Padukalam" by Koothuppattarai at 7 p.m. are the other items on the agenda.
