Seminar

Vedic Sangeeta Foundation (Ph: 2499 7422) is conducting a seminar on Vedas and Music at Tag Centre, 36, TTK Road, Alwarpet on May 8 at 9.30 a.m. Well known personalities of Chennai — Judge K. Parasaran, N. Ravi, Editor, The Hindu, neurophysician Dr. Krishnamoorthy Srinivas, police administrator C. L. Ramakrishnan and scholar and musicologist Pappu Venugopala Rao, will speak.

Annamacharya Jayanthi

Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha, T. Nagar (Ph: 2815 1417) is celebrating Annamacharya Jayanthi on May 7 at Music Academy Mini Hall from 6.30 p.m. Senior Malladi Brothers (Suribabu and Narayana Sarma) will preent a concert.

Sita Kalyanam

Asthika Seva Sangam, Triplicane (Ph: 2841 0354/2859 3544/94440 87679) is conducting Sita Kalyanam for the 11th year in the bhajanotsav tradition at Triplicame Fund Kalyana Mandapam from May 7-9. Swami Namanandhagiri will render namasankeertanam on Saturday at 8.30 a.m.

Harikatha

To commemorate M. S. Subbulakshmi Day, Hamsadhwani has organised a Harikatha, `Kalinga Nardhanam' by N. V. Alamelu and Dr. Subburaman at Youth Hostel, Second Avenue, Indira Nagar on May 8 at 6 p.m.

Symposium

A symposium on Vedadri Maharshi's teachings will take place on May 8 at 9.30 a.m. at Kamarajar Arangam, Anna Salai. T. N. Arulanandan will give the welcome speech. Dr. V. Chockalingam, P. Paramasivan, K. Perumal, Vedasubbaiah and S. Mayilmurugan will deliver special lectures.

Honouring YGM

Actor Y. Gee. Mahendra will be honoured for his 45th year in theatre, UAA's 54th year and the troupe's 5555th stage show, on May 8, 6 p.m., at Narada Gana Sabha. Nagesh, Kamal Hassan, K. J. Yesudas, Manorama, Vairamuthu, Justice Bhaktavatsalam and Nalli Kuppusami Chetti will participate in the felicitation function organised by Nataka Academy (Ph: 24617559).

Dance festival

The Chithirai Dance Festival of Salangai Oli, 21/4, Manimekalai Street, E. Tambaram (Ph: 2239 2469) will be celebrated on May 8 and 9 at Mylapore Fine Arts Club and on May 14, 15 and 16 at Vani Mahal, T. Nagar. The chief guest at the inauguration on May 8 will be film actor Jayabharathi.

Special homam

The Lord Aravamudha Perumal Kainkarya Sabha will organise a special homam at the Aravamudha Perumal temple in Kethandipatti, near Vaniyambadi, Vellore district, on May 13, to invoke divine blessing for timely rain and public welfare. The homam is to be performed by Dharmapuri Sri Lakshminarasimhachariar, a savant dedicated to the worship of Chakkarathazhwar. He has performed hundreds of Sudarsana Yagyams over the past 25 years. Ramanuja jayanti will be observed at the temple on May 12.

Music and dance fest

Chidambaram Naadha Brahmam, Chidambaram, organised a dance and music festival recently at Aayiram Kaal Mandapam, Sri Nataraja temple, Chidambaram. The programmes got off to a start on May 1 with S. Ganesh giving a vocal concert. Ramjhi's Isai Mazhalai troupe entertained the audience.

This was followed by a dance drama. Preetha Selvasubramaniam presented a concert the next day. A jalatarangam recital by Sita Doraiswamy and a dance drama, `Sakthi Thandavam,' by Nrutyalahari School of Music and Dance were the other events. Dance performances were presented by the students of Sri Vani Nataraj Natya Kalalaya, Thillai Sri Sivagami Natyalaya and Abinaya Natya Kalalaya. Bavadharani and Reshmi presented vocal recitals and Mithilaya offered a dance drama.
