Harmony in divinity

B. RAMADEVI

Work is on in full swing at Sri Kamakshi temple, Coimbatore.

PRESIDING DEITY: Sri Kamakshi Amman.

The Kamakshi Amman temple in Coimbatore is one of the few temples where every devotee is assured of darshan of his ishta deiva. The temple was consecrated in 1979 with Sri Kamakshi at the centre with separate shrines for Sri Maha Ganapathy and Navagrahas. The temple grew in popularity and with the munificence of the devotees expanded and more deities were installed in the course of time. The Ashtalakshmi idols with Mahavishnu at the centre is a unique feature of this temple. The idols of Sri Adi Sankara, and his chief disciples, are truly impressive. The special sannadhis for Sri Ayyappan, Sri Guruvayoorappan, Sri Rama, Sri Panduranga, Sri Dattatreya, and Sri Mahalingam enhance the divine ambience.

All the important days related to the various deities are celebrated with great devotion. Sri Chakra has been installed in front of the main deity. Navavarana Puja, which demands discipline and absolute austerity from the performer and hence not often undertaken, is performed on important days. Generally, only Srividya Upasakas perform this puja and devotees in Coimbatore are fortunate that it is performed in this temple as well as in the adjacent Annapoorani temple. This temple is being managed by a committee appointed by the Kanchi Math. This committee and Sri Kamakshi Cultural Revival Committee have together started the renovation of this temple on a massive scale.

Structural changes

A new Rajagopuram is being constructed, the asbestos shed will be replaced with an R.C. structure and a few changes will be made in the position of the sannadhis.
