SPRUCED UP: The five-tier Rajagopuram and the small towers shining after renovation.
The stupendous task of renovation is complete and the Kaleeswarar temple in Cheetanancheri (also known as Sri Krishnapuri) in Kancheepuram district awaits kumbabhishekam scheduled for June 17.
The Sivalingam, swayambu, was said to have been worshipped by Sri Krishna, Subramanya, Pandavas and Bharadwaja Rishi. Legend has it that a trader offered worship to the lingam. He would take rest under a Manipunga tree. On such occasions he noticed that herds of cows came and showered milk on the lingam. Siva appeared in his dream and ordained him to build a temple for Him.
The merchant used his wealth to raise a temple on five acres of land and the pujas continued. Although endowed with assets the temple was lying in a state of neglect. There were cracks on the roof through which water leaked. The devotees galvanised themselves into a committee and started renovation work.
The temple wears a new look with separate shrines for Sri Kaleeswarar and Sri Sivakamasundari Ambal, Sri Vinayaka and Subramanya. There are two dwajasthamba one each for the Lord and His consort. The Rajagopuram is five-tiered. Huge halls where devotees could assemble on special occasions and a beautiful tank with well laid out steps complete the temple.
The estimate was Rs. 25 lakhs and the committee raised the money from philanthropist and donors. Now work is over and Mahakumbabhishekam will take place on June 17 at 10.15 a.m. Preliminary rituals begin on June 13. Those who contribute may send in their donations to Sri Kaleeshwarar Temple Renovation Committee (SKTRC), 145, Ruby Complex, Neelangarai, Chennai - 600 041 (Ph: 2449 1112/2449 2223).
