SPUN AND WOVEN: The fabric is more than a fashion statement.
Khadi-lovers and the government policy have helped to revive people's interest in this material. Suited for all climates, its textured beauty is in tune with the natural look of today.
Bringing together the spun and woven fabric from across the country are Khadi Gramodyog Bhawans (844, Anna Salai, Chennai - 600 002 and 236, Avvai Shanmugam Marg Chennai - 600 086).
The Khadi Gramodyog Bhawans have a range of clothes, towels and bedspreads on offer. The collection includes kaftans, salwar kurta suits as well as khadi silk, cotton and muslin saris from Ponduru and West Bengal. Also available in soft and vibrant colours are the women's kurtas and tops.
Elegant
The men's section has elegant long and short kurtas in sheer muslin khadi. They also have striped ones from Kerala in bright and mellow colours. Smart, well-tailored raw silk khadi jackets are also on display.
Prana (D-6, 6th Street, Anna Nagar East) is perhaps the only boutique in the city to showcase a permanent line of exclusive designer khadi wear created by Prabha Nagarajan.
Classic line
It has a stunningly simple yet classic line of ladies tops, wrap-around skirts and trousers in indigo, blue, green, pink and gold. Working closely with khadi weavers in and around Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Prabha has created lovely saris with zari and temple borders offsetting the natural glow of khadi.
For the men, there are beautifully-tailored indigo kurtas, as well as vegetable-dyed ones in bright and natural shades.
Other boutiques or shops which occasionally display the fabric are Amethyst (Sundar Mahal, Rani Padmavathiar Road, Gopalapuram) with its periodic exhibitions of designer ensembles and the Crafts Council of India, which has bi-annual sales of the material and khadi saris.
Dastkar, a well-known NGO working with Andhra khadi weavers, also has similar exhibitions in the city.
