Collective Chaos presents two films by two great filmmakers on August 27 and 28. The first film on August 27 is Taking Sides by Istvan Szabo. After Hitler took over power in 1933, many Jewish artists were forced to leave Germany, persuading others to protest through voluntarily exile. Wilhelm Furtwängler, arguably the most distinguished music conductor of his generation, chose to stay, serving as one of the Nazi's foremost cultural assets. Though never a member of the Party, Furtwängler was the recipient of government honours and appointments, associated with party members, and conducted at party functions, including Hitler's birthday. Taking Sides is a rare film that demands the audience to engage in a dialogue with the characters. The duration of the film is 105 minutes.
Andrei Tarkovsky's second film, Andrei Rublev, to be screened on August 28, is a massive and sweeping retelling of the life of the 15th-century Russian icon painter and perhaps the first great Russian artist. A moving mosaic of time, spirituality, dreams, history, culture, and politics, Tarkovsky's masterpiece was immediately condemned by the Russian authorities, who waited five years before giving it an official release The duration of this film is 205 minutes.
