AUSPICIOUS: The Subuhani couple heralding the start of a new academic year.

The nagaswaram concert of Shaik Mahaboob Subuhani and his wife Kalishabi Mahaboob Subuhani marked the start of yet another academic year of Agasthiar Fine Arts Sabha, Government Music School, Tiruchi.

The couple commenced the programme with the `Ninnukori' varnam by Ramanathapuram Srinivasa Iyengar in Mohanam. It was followed by a raga alapana for `Tatvamaria Tharama' by Papanasam Sivan in reetigowla and a brilliant kriti of Gopalakrishna Bharathi, `Ananda Nadamaduvar Thillai,' in Poorvikalyani.

The fine tune of `Yediyosana,' a Tyagaraja kriti in Kiranaavali followed by Abheri proved his mastery. His rendition of `Nagumomu,' was especially a lesson to the young students, who were shown the intricacies of the raga.

The couple also presented `Kanden Kanden' song of Arunachala Kavirayar in Bageswari, raagam, `Karunai Deivame,' a song composed by Madurai Srinivasan in Sindhu Bhairavi, ragam, `Jagajanani,' a song of Sudhananda Bharathi in Rathipathipriya, ragam, much to the delight of the audience.

The programme came to an end with a tillana by Swati Tirunal in ragam Danasree. In the middle of the concert, young tavil artistes Mettupalayam M. S. Ravikumar and Viralimalai R. M. J. Karthik presented a tani avarthanam that kept the audience spellbound.

Courses offered

The Regional Assistant Director, Department of Art and Culture, R. Gunasekaran, inaugurated the programme. In his brief address he said the Government Music School in Tiruchi, run by the Department, offered five courses in vocal, nagaswaram, tavil, Thevaram and Bharatanatyam. A total of 104 boys and girls from different parts of the State were students, he said.

Gunasekaran said the Department maintained four music schools in Tiruchi region, comprising Tiruchi, Karur, Pudukottai and Perambalur districts and it has been planned to organise a two-day music workshop jointly by these schools shortly.

The headmaster of the Government Music School, M. N. Sathiamoorthi, welcomed the gathering.
