Samajam dedicated to Tyagaraja
Sri Sadguru Sangeetha Samajam, No.199, Vellala Street, Purasawalkam, (Ph: 2645 2977) started with the objective of propagating Sri Tyagaraja's kritis and philosophy, is celebrating its golden jubilee this year.
The celebrations will take place at Sri Karpaga Vinayakar Temple premises, 2nd Link Street, Adyar, from October 21-25.
On the occasion of the golden jubilee a souvenir with articles on the various facets of Saint Tyagaraja, will be released. With musicologist Prof. P. Sambamurthi as its founder president, the Samajam, since October 1955, has been observing Krishna Panchami Thithi, the saint composer's samadhi day, every month with a puja and concert. It has brought out a volume of Sri Tyagaraja's 675 kritis with notations and Tamil translation, and holds annual music competitions for children in January.
The Samajam was the pioneer in Akhanda Ganam. In 1967, thanks to the efforts of Musiri Subramania Iyer and Prof. Sambamurthi, it celebrated the 200th Jayanthi of Sri Tyagaraja at his samadhi in Tiruvaiyaru with a 24-hour Akhanda Ganam and continues the practice on the Jayanthi day.

Govinda Rao, has arranged a series of 50 concerts between October and February 2006, (at the rate of 10 concerts a month) at Adyar, Mylapore, T. Nagar, Madipakkam and Purasawalkam. Sri Thyagarja's unique thematic kritis will be the highlight of these programmes.
