NUTSHELL

Vaishnava meet

A Vaishnava sammelan is being organised at Srirangam, from March 11-13. Acharyas of various sects of the faith including Madhwa, Chaitanya, Gowdiya and Sikh have been invited to participate in the deliberations. The samelan will be conducted in two sections — the Acharya Vidwat Sadas and Maha Jana Sadas.

Sri Vishvesha Tirtha Swami of the Pejavar Math will inaugurate the meet at the 1,000-pillar mantapam of the Srirangam temple. Sri Kaliyan Ramanuja Jeeyar Swami, Vanamamalai Math, will offer benediction. Sriranga Narayana Jeeyar Swamy will give the presidential address. On March 11, at 8 p.m., the compositions of Andal and Meera will be rendered by Sriram Parasuram and Anuradha Sriram. The conference is organised by K.V. Varadarajan, son of Karappangadu Venkatachary Swamigal. For details contact 24993558.

Tyagaraja aradhana

Kartik Fine Arts is organising Tyagaraja Aradhana on March 5, 9 a.m. at Mylapore Fine Arts auditorium. Ramjhi's Isai Mazhalai group will render Pancharatna kritis. O. S. Thiagarajan will give a concert at 6.30 p.m.

Dance series

Kartik Fine Arts has organised the talent promotion programme of Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Mandram at Narada Gana Sabha Mini Hall, March 9-12. Five participants from Chennai and three from outside the city will perform. Purandaradasa aradhana

Hamsadhwani is organising Purandaradasa aradhana on March 3, 6 p.m. at Youth Hostel, Indira Nagar Dr. S. S. Badrinath, chairman, Sankara Netralaya presents the Hanrag-Hamsadhwani cash award (Rs. 10,000) to Kuzhikkarai P. Viswalingam. Mambalam Sisters will render Purandaradasa kritis.

Radha Kalyana Mahotsava Institute Trust, Nungambakkam (Ph: 2825 6161) is celebrating Radha Kalyanam on March 5 at Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal Mandapam. Sri Namananda Giri Swamigal will grace the occasion. Sri Panduranga Bhajanai Mandali will render bhajans.

Remembrance

To commemorate Karaikudi Muthu Iyer day on March 4, Thiagaraja Sangeetha Vidwath Samajam, Mylapore, has organised a flute recital by N. Ramani at the samajam premises at 6.15 p.m.

Music competition

Mahathi Academy of Music and Dance, 23, Munusamy Street, Venkatesh Nagar, Virugambakkam, will conduct the third annual music competition on March 12 at Clarence Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Vinayakam Street, Virugambakkam.

Vocal and instrumental music competitions will be held for those between the age group of 4 and 21 years and 8 and 21 years respectively. For details call 2377 2387 or 9884197172.

Honouring women

Priya Vision's Priyamaana Thozhi Club, an organisation for women, will celebrate its sixth year on March 8 by honouring those who have excelled in various fields. The following is the list of awardees.

Brahmotsavam

The 12th Brahmotsavam of Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple, No.2, 2nd Main Road, Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, (Ph: 2441 2529/2441 3995) will be held from March 3 to 14. Music concerts will be held in the evenings at Sri Kanchi Mahaswami Anantha Mandapam. Yagasala pujas, Vedaparayanam and Divya Prabhandham in the mornings and evenings, have been organised. At 10 a.m. Sri Utsavar Abhishekam, Vishnu Sahasranamam chanting and Oonjal Utsavam will go on, on all the days of the utsavam. An amount of Rs.501 has to be paid to the temple for Oonjal Utsavam.

Exhibition cum sale

Karma, Treasure of Orissa Handlooms and Handicrafts, is holding an exhibition cum sale of wide varieties of handicraft items at C. P. Art Centre, 1, Eldams Road, Alwarpet. The exhibition is on from March 3 to 12.
