Inimitable style

T.K. SADASIVAN

Nangiarkoothu Aparna Nangiar skilfully portrayed the various characters in ‘Poothanamoksham.’

Expressive narration: Aparna Nangiar.

‘Poothanamoksham’ Nangiarkoothu, organised by Bank Employees’ Arts Movement (BEAME), Ernakulam, captivated viewers with its wonderful display of ‘sattvika abhinaya.’ Aparna Nangiar enthralled the audience with her expressive narration and portrayal of various characters.

Aparna, disciple of the legendary Ammanur Madhava Chakyar and Usha Nangiar, has already carved a niche among Koodiyattom artistes. Through her inimitable style of acting, she has proved her ability to portray different characters and also do justice to each character’s salient features.

Simple story

The story of ‘Poothanamoksham’ is a simple one, but it provides ample opportunity for an actor to prove his or her talent. Aparna transformed herself into Gopikas, musicians and even a cow and a calf. Aparna was at her best during the last sequence where she displayed her brilliance in portraying the confusion of Poothana.

On one hand, Poothana is overcome by her affection for the naughty Sreekrishna and, on the other, is her animosity towards Kamsa who has sent her on the mission to kill the infant. In between, she remembers her mission.

The subsequent enactment of Poothana’s escalating pain and death was terrific.

In Koodityattom and Nangiarkoothu, the drumming supplements and supports the performance. Kalamandalam Narayanan Nambiar and Kalamandalam Rajeev on the mizhavu and Kalanilayam Unnikrishnan on the edakka contributed to make the performance an unforgettable one.

They captured every feeling of the artists and supplemented it brilliantly with appropriate and skilful drumming throughout the performance.

Saritha Krishnakumar provided the thalam.
