Vyjayanthimala Bali
It was a treat of vintage classical Bharathanatyam for the rasikas. In her performance offered as a homage to her guru Kittappa Pillai for Thanjaur Sri K.P.Kittappa Pillai Memorial Natya Vizha organised by K.P.K.Chandrasekaran. Vyjayantimala Bali pro
ved that age does not wither an artiste of her calibre. Tastefully attired in a sari costume, she chose to perform three rare items. The first item was Melaprapti in Nattai (Anga Taala).
The opening stance, with outstretched hands holding a mudra symbolising a palanquin being carried, set the mood for this item. This rhythmic number set in three speeds was a prayer to the Almighty. A Thirugnanasambandar Kautvam in Arabhi (Adi) was followed by story telling sequences in the Dharu of Muthuswami Dikshitar, “Nee saati deveviamendu.” The story of Siva in the form of Valmiksha subduing Vishnu’s pride was beautifully rendered.
The abhinaya was literal, closely following the textual lines.
There were no elaborate sancharis: brevity was the hallmark, but brevity heightened by lyricism and grace; bhava-laden abhinaya, arising out of a deep understanding of music. Vyjayantimala was accompanied by Vanathi Raghuraman (vocal), Jayshreee Ramanathan (natuvangam), S.S.R.Krishnan (mridangam), and Vijaya Raghavan (violin). This was followed by a Bharatanatyam programme by the students of Thanjavur K.P.K.Chandrashekaran.
