Seminar on Daruvu
Daruvu in Kuchipudi dates back to the period when Bharata wrote Natya Sastra. It mentioned 200 Dhruva Gaanas – epitomes of composite skills – that underline the art of dance and drama. Down the ages we find it in Kuchipudi tribal clans, known as Jakkulus also later came to be known as Yakshas who sang and narrated as they danced.
Daruvus are also known as Dhruva Gaanaas. These are the essence of Yakshaganas. Daruvus have certain Lakshana (characteristics) in terms of musical and rhythmical patterns, led by the Mridangam Shabdams(mnemonics), with a distinct regional identity to make render the number virile and lively.
Kuchipudi dancers made the best use of Daruvus, as they formed a part of Yakshagana, the main form of Kuchipudi till 1930. Daruvus come with prefixes such as Pravesana Daruu,
Nishkramana(exit), Nepadhya(background), Samvaada(argumentative), Akshepana(blaming), Varnana(description), Uttara Pratyuthara(dialogue) Daruvus.
