GUDIPOODI SRIHARI

Talented youngsters were at the forefront of Sri Nataraja Kuchipudi Dance Academy’s anniversary celebrations.

Synchronised steps Dancers execute a routine during their performance.

Sai Nataraja Kuchipudi Dance academy put to view a lot of young talent in its show at Ravindra Bharati, last week, marking its 17th anniversary celebrations. Adhyatma Ramayana kirtana by Pavitravani Patale, Gollakalap am Pravesa Daruvu by Srividya, a Thodi raga Padavarnam, by a group of young artistes and the Madana sequence from Bhama Kalapam by Nivedita added to the variety and richness of the show. The Dasavatara Sabdam and an Annamayya kirtana, a Tarangam of Narayana Teertha were other numbers that raised the standard of the presentation excellence. The popular Jatiswaram in Athana by a 12-member group looked as though we were watching a ballet of Jatis with the young dancers moving in a geometrical plan, matching the sollukattu like conduction from the wings was going on. There are three kalapas in Kuchipudi - Golla Kalapam, Bhama Kalapam and Dadinamma Kalapam and each opens with a Pravesa Daruvu of the main role. Srividya a talented dancer took up the rare Golla Kalapam sequence of how a milk maid sets out rendering Golla Bhama Vachenu, for selling milk, curd and butter. And the abhinaya to the repetition of the pallavi was in itself a charming opening, a varnam, generally, a rare entity in Kuchipudi. But with the advent of Lakshminarayana Sastry who introduced a solo structure in Kuchipudi dance, adding to the traditional Yakshagana system, this varnam also found place in the repertoire, with intermittent jatis like in Bharatanatyam. A four member team of girls presented on this occasion a pada varnam in Todi matching their foot work to each syllable of nattuvangam. The thematic part was elevated by vocalist Srivalli Sarma’s expressive rendition.

Another attraction of the fare was the Siggayanoyamma from the Bhamakalapam of Siddendra Yogi. This was the best number of the whole show and Nivedita proved a commendable artiste, strong in all elements of dance and drama and music that also had Madana episode set in Ananda Bhairavi. Dasavatara Sabdam was another attraction for the show featuring half a dozen girls. This was set in Mohana Raga. Each avatara was preceded by rhythmic syllables and the girls took different roles that occur in each of the avatara. The entire show sounded and looked totally refreshing revealing the talents of all the dancers. Ramadevi conducted the show with crisp Nattuvangam to the vocal support of Srivalli Sarma. Film director K. Viswanath felicitated the artistes.
