Pure artistry

K.K. GOPALAKRISHNAN

Nangiarkoothu Kalamandalam Girija’s experience and artistry evoked the dilemma of Poothana in ‘Poothanamoksham.’

Kalamandalam Girija, the first non-Nangiar to take up Nangiarkoothu, joined Kerala Kalamandalam as a student of Koodiyattom in 1971; she was groomed under the late Paimkulam Rama Chakyar.

Girija gave a luminous presentation of the episode ‘Poothanamoksham’ in Nangiarkoothu style at Melpathur auditorium in connection with Narayaneeyam Day celebrations at Guruvayur Temple. With a brilliant mix of body language and emotions, Girija interpreted the scenes poetically. It depicted Poothana, send by Kamsa to kill Sri Krishna, disguising herself as a young woman to succeed in her mission.

Prick of conscience

It is Poothana’s conscience that stops her from killing Krishna. Girija captivatingly unveiled the latent feeling of motherhood in a woman by emphasising more on facial expressions and mudras. Girija’s fine artistry and over three decades of stage experience evoked the dilemma of Poothana effortlessly. Looking at the boy’s face brings sorrow on her face but Kamsa’s order makes her shudder in fear.

It was one of the highlights of Girija’s portrayal. Finally, she makes up her mind to kill the child.

Poothana’s predicament was portrayed by Girija sans melodrama. Kalamandalam Achuthanandan, Dhanarajan and Sajith Vijayan accompanied on the mizhavu.

Girija’s disciples Kalamandalam Prasanna and Vijisha provided thalam.
