Far from noteworthy

The recent presentation of ‘Srikrishna Parijatham’ was a disappointing fare.

Visakha Music and Dance Academy staged the dance ballet Srikrishna Parijatham at its auditorium Kalabharathi on Monday. This was a presentation of the city-based Kuchipudi Kalakshetra, an offshoot of the Chennai-based Kuchipudi Art Academy.The presentation was originally splendidly scripted by S.V. Bhujangaraya Sarma, spearheaded by Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam and was set to exquisite music by Dwaram Bhavanarayana Rao and Patrayani Sangeetha Rao; it attracted overwhelming response.

For most of the audience who had earlier witnessed the ballet being performed under the direction of Dr. Vempati, the recent presentation turned out to be disappointing. The aim of the personae in-charge of its presentation seemed to be to increase its duration (little less than one-and-half hours) by an hour more than the original. In the process, many an episode from other ballets like Bhamakalaapam in which Krishna, Rukmini and Satyabhama figure, were indiscriminately mixed.

The singers K. Suryanarayana and K. Lakshminarasamma, the instrumentalists - the violinist Neeladrirao, flautist Murali and veena artiste Sudhakar and the principal of the Kalakshetra Harirama Murthy on the nattuvangam – could not manage to bring out the harmony in the music score. Suryakanthi Lal on mridangam fared well to an extent. Similarly, except Kavyasmruthi who appeared sprightly smart as Narada, Himabindu as Krishna, Sandhyasri as Satyabhama, Revathi as Rukmini appeared to be articulating the mudra, bhangima and movement rather mechanically sans any facial expressions. Actors Saipavan, Srikar, Saichandini, Durgaswetha, Viswashanti, Swarnalatha and Subbaraju who appeared in minor roles as Nartakulu, Sootradharulu etc., in contrast, appeared more lively. Makeup by Suryarao was exceptionally good.
