Epic visualised

Vyjayantimala Bali is presenting ‘Aichiyar Kuravai’ at Bharat Kalachar.

Gearing up for the grand saga: Vyjayanthimala Bali

Ilangovadigal’s ‘Silappadikaram’ is an epic into which dancers dip time and again to come up with themes for elaboration. The court scene where Kannagi questions the King’s verdict that took her husband’s life and the su bsequent burning of Madurai, especially is of great interest. Kannagi’s chastity is much eulogised.

The latest to take up the grand saga is Vyjayantimala Bali. She has chosen to present ‘Aichiyar Kuravai,’ a segment in Madurai kaandam for Bharat Kalachar at the YGP auditorium, Tirumalaipillai Toad, tomorrow (December 22), 7 p.m. The story begins with Kovalan returning to wife Kannagi after parting with dancer Madhavi.

The couple leave for Madurai in search of green pastures. She gives her precious anklet to Kovalan asking him to sell it and use the money to start a new chapter in their life. Kovalan leaves Kannagi in the care of Madhari, a shepherd woman and sets off.

The women in the farm encounter ill omens and decide to perform puja and perform kuravai, a form of dance, in praise of Thirumal. Vyjayantimala has choreographed it to suit a solo. “A lot of research has gone into the work,” she says and thanks Prof. S Raghuraman, M.A.Venkatakrishnan and Bhuma Venkatakrishnan for their help and support. Dr.S.Ramanathan has scored the music for this work.
