All for male artistes

The 82nd birth anniversary celebration sof Kelucharan Mohaptra saw nine male dancers showcasing their talents.

Srjan, the dance institution started by Ratikant Mohapatra, son of Kelucharan Mohapatra, in association with Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, had organised a three-day dance festival from January 8. Named Marga Darshan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra purush dance festival, it was dedicated to New Delhi-based Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Odissi guru Surendra Nath Jena who passed away recently. Nine young male dancers from various parts of the country showcased their talents in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak and Odissi.

Disciple of Deepak Mazumdar, Mumbai-based Bharatanatyam artiste Pavitra Bhat also recipient of the Singar Mani and Nalanda Nritya Nipoon titles, captured everybody’s attention with his charming figure, sharp and swift movements. Pavitra has set up an institute in Mumbai where he teaches dance.

Hyderabad-based Kuchipudi dancer P. Girish Chandra who also performed in this festival has taken up dance as a profession. Pursuing masters in performing arts at Hyderabad Central University, he is a trained Kuchipudi and Yaksha Gana artiste by Vedantham Ramalingam Sastri and under the guidance of Prof. Jonnalagadda Anuradha. Aurangabad-based Nitin P. Shirale’s passion for dance is unbound. One of the senior-most students of Mahagami Sangeet Academy, he has been receiving training both in Kathak and Odissi from Parwati Dutta. Although he graduated in environmental science and currently pursuing study of Indology at Pune University, his heart is with dance. Nitin has attended workshops of great masters like Pt. Birju Maharaj, Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra, Dipti Omchery Bhalla in Mohini Attam, Kumudini Lakhia in Kathak and Vishwajit Singh in Thang-Ta of Manipur.
