Kolkata, Dec. 23 (PTI): An anti-government protest called by main Opposition Trinamool Congress of Mamata Banerjee, on Wednesday turned violent when protesters clashed with the police leaving several including 20 police personnel injured.

City Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee, told reporters a Deputy Commissioner and an Assistant Commissioner were among the 20 police personnel injured in heavy brickbatting by Trinamool Congress demonstrators.

Some TC supporters were injured in police lathi-charge, he said. The TC MLA Jyotipriya Mullick, was reportedly injured, he said.

Trinamool Congress alleged scores of their activists were injured and 34 of them had been hospitalised following "unprovoked" police lathi-charge on demonstrators.

Mukherjee said said 1100 protesters, including city Mayor and a senior party leader Subrata Mukherjee, and 42 party legislators, courted arrest near the city police headquarters protesting "all-round failure" of the Left Front Government.

The trouble started when Trinamool Congress agitators rushed towards the police headquarters at Lalbazar and hurled bricks, soda bottles and coconut shells at the police immediately after Banerjee addressed the rally of several thousands of party supporters at a nearby spot and left the place.
