World Cup: Sri Lanka trounces Bangladesh by 198 runs
Port of Spain, March 22 (PTI): Sri Lanka did a neighbourly favour to keep India's cricket World Cup hopes alive, battering Bangladesh by 198 runs via Duckworth-Lewis method in the Group B match.
Veteran Sanath Jayasuriya overcame a mid-innings hamstring pull to blast 109 off just 87 balls as the Lankans posted a mammoth 318 for four and then sent Bangladesh packing for 112 runs in 37 overs in Wednesday's rain-plagued match.
India now meet Sri Lanka in a do-or-die tie in the same Queen's Park Oval tomorrow and while a win would keep them in the hunt for a place in the Super Eight, defeat would mean the end of all roads for the Men in Blue.
And even if India pull off the match against Sri Lanka, all would depend on the last Group B match between Bangladesh and Bermuda on March 25. If Bangladesh beat Bermuda, net run rate would determine which two teams would qualify to the next stage.
Meanwhile against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh never looked like the team, which had pulled off a huge upset win against India in their previous match.
If their bowlers cut a sorry figure in the match, the batsmen proved no better and chasing a revised improbable winning target of 311 in 46 overs, they folded for a meagre 112 runs in 37 overs.
It was an unending procession of Bangla batsmen who could not put up any semblance of a fight and Mohammad Ashraful (45 not out off 63 balls) was the only, lonely face of their resistance in this uneven contest.
With a mountain to climb, Bangladesh suffered early jolts and were gasping at 72 for six when rain interrupted play for the second time.
Chaminda Vaas trapped opener Shahriar Nafees (0) with the fifth ball of the innings, before Lasith Malinga came up with a two-wicket burst, removing Tamim Iqbal (6) and Aftab Ahmed (12), to reduce the side to 20 for three.
Tamim, who had slammed a sparkling 51 against India, paid the price for poking at an away going deilvery, while Aftab miscued a pull and Jayasuriya, never looking a player nearing 38, ran backwards and then jumped to pouch it near square leg.
Mushfiqur Rahim (6) then fell cheaply while the wily Muttiah Muralitharan foxed Saqibul Hasan (4) with a doosra which crashed into the stumps.
As if the series of setbacks was not enough, Bangladesh lost their captain Habibul Bashar (18) who was run out while responding to Ashraful's call for a single that never was and the side slumped to 66 for six.
Their last four wickets added 46 runs only to delay the inevitable and in the end, it turned out to be a cakewalk for the Lankans.
Malinga was the pick of Sri Lankan bowlers, claiming three for 27 in his six overs.
Earlier, Jayasuriya had blasted his way to 83 runs when he pulled his hamstring. He, however, returned in the closing overs to haunt the bowlers and smacked 109 off just 87 balls, and his violent knock was studded with seven sixes and as many boundaries.
Kumar Sangakkara struck 56 off just 55 balls with the help of three boundaries and a six, while Chamara Silva remained not out on 52 from 48 balls to take the score past 300.
Asked to bat first, Sri Lanka got off to a flier with Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga (26) launching a scathing attack on a toothless Bangla attack.
Jayasuriya was belting Bangla bowlers all over the park and it was an inkling of things to come when the left-hander sent Syed Rasel over the backward square leg for his first six of the match in the fourth over.
Tharanga squandered a good start when he uppishly played a Mohammad Rafique delivery at backward point where Aftab Ahmed leapt, fumbled and finally landed with the ball to complete a spectacular catch. Tharanga and Jayasuriya put on 98 runs off 14.2 overs.
Sri Lanka raced to 136 for one in 24 overs when it started raining and after play resumed, Jayasuriya pulled his hamstring to retire hurt.
Mahela Jayawardene (46) and Kumar Sangakkara (56) then kept the momentum going even though the Sri Lankan captain was nowhere near his best today.
Jayawardene survived as many as three run out chances and was even dropped once but he failed to capitalise on the largesse and returned four-run shy of his half-century.
By then, Jayasuriya was ready to resume his onslaught and the Bangla bowlers simply had no respite.
The veteran left-hander hit Abdul Razzak over mid-wicket to complete his 24th ODI ton in 85 balls and celebrated it with another hoick over long off for the same result.
The next ball, however, saw him depart, attempting a reverse sweep that found the short fine leg. Sri Lanka had reached the 300-mark by then.
Mohammad Rafique was the pick of the Bangla bowlers, claiming one for 48 in his 10 overs.
