PEMRA bars broadcasters from reporting on political activities
Islamabad (PTI): Pakistan's electronic media regulator has barred TV channels and radio stations from reporting on political activities and airing interviews of politicians ahead of tomorrow's general election, sparking angry response from the broadcasters and scribes who termed the move as undemocratic.
In a notice sent to all broadcasters, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) said they were barred from reporting on political activities and airing interviews and comments of political leaders or party activists.
The notice also said they should strictly abide by PEMRA's guidelines or action would be taken against them.
Reacting angrily to the notice, the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) warned in a letter sent to PEMRA that TV channels and radio stations might go off the air if the ban is not withdrawn.
Both the PBA and journalists condemned the notice, describing it as undemocratic and unconstitutional. They called on people to protest against this attempt to "muzzle" the freedom of expression.
The PBA also said it would organise a 'hartal' or strike if PEMRA tried to implement the measure.
