  • Major among 2 killed in J&K

Jammu (PTI): Two security personnel, including an army major, were killed and four critically injured in separate incidents on Sunday as army, police and BSF men engaged militants in fierce gunbattles in Jammu and Kashmir.

Major Bhanu Pratap Singh (29) of 43 Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operation Group (SOG) constable Sanjeev Raina were killed during a gunbattle with militants in Thanamandi belt of Rajouri district, defence spokesman Col S D Goswami told PTI.

The incident happened when militants fired at army and SOG personnel of the police, which launched a joint search and cordon operation in the district acting on a tip off that a group of about six Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were roaming in Kunda-Pangai forest belt of the district, he said.

Three other security men Rifleman Ravinder Singh, Lance Naik Gain Prakash and Constable Javed were injured in the ensuing gunfight. They were rushed to the district hospital in Rajouri.

The Lashker-e-Toiba and the Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen have claimed responsibility for the attack and threatened more offensives in the state.

In another incident, Constable Gangadhar of the BSF sustained critical bullet injuries when his troops foiled an infiltration bid along the LoC near Doba border post in Sabzian area of Poonch district this afternoon.

Army personnel also busted three hideouts of LeT while police busted a module of the same outfit and arrested three of its cadres including a Pakistan-based 'commander' from the Jammu railway station.

During the army operations, LeT hideouts in Doda, Rajouri and Poonch districts were busted, official sources said adding that RDX weighing three kgs, 23 grenades and two country-made rifles were seized. The RDX was recovered from the Doda hideout.
